I agree! Lord Eldus was kindhearted and he had the people's interests at heart. His demise was shocking and disappointing. What will become of his son though? I don't think he was mentioned again throughout the book.

Lord Eldus was a lovable man. I didn't like his death. I feel he was the only clean guy in the story with genuine purpose for voulhire

Indeed I was disappointed by the sudden abrupt dismiss, I wished I could more about him to the end of the series

Lord Eldus was my most favorite character bar none. It is sad we won't experience his magnificently pure mind.

Absolutely. I felt invested in his story, wondering how he can change the dark past of the Hillport. When he died, I was sure that somehow he will be resurrected by the author. It felt like a big potential was wasted for no reason.

Halfway through the book, I really thought Eldus and Hillport were going to be a big part of the series going forward, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I'm wondering what sort of role his son will take up in the future though.

Me too. I was surprised that he didn't find a way to escape. However, his son didn't die, so that must count for something. Nevertheless, I think that he died because Midius Maido refused to act. Still, those Riva Rohavi guys are so wicked.

Yes I was surprised at the death of Lord Eldus. I enjoyed his character, from his friendship with King Wilhelm and the trust the King has in his friend. I liked the dedication and drive Lord Eldus takes with him to Hillport to improve the city, showing he is a noble and caring man. He had good dynamics with his family and I was expecting him to be a leading character throughout the series. However Voulhire is an unpredictable land with a spectrum of characters, good and evil, so the author has done a good job with the element of surprise.

I was heartbroken when Lord Eldus died. His will to try and help his townfolk at all cost was admirable - a characteristic of a true leader. Unfortunately, Hillport did not have the weaponry or man power to defend itself. A great leader, in times of peace, prepares for war. Riva, on the other hand, reminds me of many tribal societies (especially in Africa, Oceania and South America) who would plunder and attack neighbouring tribes, and then dance in celebration of their (often brutal) victories. RIva just did it the other way around, using dancing as a means of attack. Poor Lord Eldus did not stand a chance.

Lord Eldus was a good and straightforward character, and maybe this explains his death. I noticed that only complicated characters survive, so if you are too good you don't have a chance to make it to the next book :).

I fact, he was really a good leader. I was really looking forward to seeing his progress in the comings book. His death was sad, he didn’t deserve the death he got.

He was my favourite character in the book. He tried so hard to help Hillport and work to discover the truth. It was brutal how he died. Then again, that I cared so much about a character's death is really a testament to Tysz's writing.

I don't think he was killed for no reason. If anything, this might help develop Marshus' character in further novels.

While I was sad because of his death, I think his character will continue through that of his son Marshus.

I was very shocked that Lord Eldus was murdered! He seemed like a good man. Trying to help the people. Trying to understand how his predecessors failed the people. His plans for rebuilding and making things better seemed amazing. But then Lord Meldorath and the Riva army ruined everything!
Lord Eldus’s potential for staying around seemed highly likely. But a good author gives his readers some shock and disappointment sometimes, just to keep them reading.

I was shocked too but this pattern appears to be common through this series. Killing amazing characters suddenly much like GOT.
