I think Galen is a great main character for this first book because the reader is introduced to Voulhire along with him.
The tone of his chapters would certainly have been different if he was less naive, but I actually liked seeing things from his more awe-filled perspective as the story shows the darker parts of Voulhire from the other characters' perspectives. It was an interesting contrast.

I didn't really much care for Galen in the first book. After reading the third though I came to love him as the main character and appreciated him more

After reading the first book, I'd have definitely said that Galen doesn't deserve to be the main character. I found him too naive and weak, but after reading King of May and The Flesh of the Mind, I must say that the author later shaped him into a character deserving to be the main protagonist.

I like Galen as the main character, his back story gives him instant empathy and he is a honourable and kind character with inherent bravery. His slight nativity is charming too and you really feel you want him to succeed and become a hero.

Even in the first book I don't think Galen is portrayed as naive. He has survived in the land of the princes so long that he must have developed enough resilience. He is new to Voulhire and firmly believes that it is a peaceful and prosperous city with brilliant people. I feel he is the best person to be the protagonist, because he is genuinely good natured, compared to the people in power who seem either to be clueless or have selfish agendas .

I agree. He's a good choice because as he is new to everything, he's a good surrogate for the audience. But his personality is too boring to make him interesting for the readers.

I think Galen is fit for the position of the main character. His out look on life is very positive and contagious. Galens excitement to go to a new land is infectious, makes the reader excited. Even when he wasn’t having that great of a time traveling.

The fact that he has come from the Lands of the Princes, and he can see Voulhire with new eyes and compare it to where he was once living, makes him a perfect main character. The very descriptions of the sky and the land that Galen gives us, help us realize that he is paying attention to every detail in his new life. And he will let us know, as a main character should, every little detail of his new life in this new land.

I feel like Galens traits are very relatable. He is emotional, grateful, positive, humble, a hard worker. He is someone you would want to be friends with. He takes time to notice the sky. Which I think is very sweet. He was emotional at his uncles letter, which again makes him very relatable. He even stands up for a bullied worker, which makes him courageous. That is an excellent trait to have in a main character. I believe Galen helps the flow of the book by being so easy to understand. You don’t have to do a lot of searching to figure out who he is. But we do see his story, on who he becomes.

Of course a change in Galens characterization could have caused a switch of the author's tone. But I think the author chose the right way to do it. You have sweet naïve Galen, and then on the other side Lord Eldus, who has plans and plots. Opposite characters to make the book more interesting.

I'm glad to here that Galen's character development gets better throughout the series. I agree that in Book 1 Galen is very naïve, especially for someone who's coming from a war-torn country, and he doesn't seem to have an opinion of this own.

I really like Galen, and I think he has so much potential as the main character. He is naive and a really good person despite the environment he grew in and he managed to survive in that kind of place, which means he's more skilled than it seems. I think he's the only pure thing in that dark and corrupt kingdom.

Well, I am not sure if deserving is a good description, but I think he is fit for it. Because while his background story is interesting enough to catch the attention, the way that he perceives things make him perfect to show the reader his surrounding. Now, in my opinion the whole political drama and power hunger going on are way more important than his story per se (at least to me) and that's why I think he is perfect. Because his story keeps you committed, but it is not distracting enough to keep you from the actually interesting part of the book.

Most part of the first book sort of concentrated on him! Don't quite know of other book in this series, but as for A new arrival under great skies yes. It was focused on his development and his struggle in the island of the 4 princes and how he came down to magneum caelum, one thing that wasn't familiar with other characters.

Galen'srole is okay. His story connects all other protagonists. Of course if characterization had been done differently it would have changed the tone of the book, but the tone is perfect as it is.

In my opinion Galen deserves to be the main character. The reader sees Voulhire through Galen's eyes as they are also new to most parts of Voulhire. Galen's character has also developed with time.

Yes Galen fits as a main character. This is because he is easier to relate too because he is a new character in the voulhire therefore we see the city in his eyes and as he struggles to understand the people and the way things unfold therein

Galen is not fit to be the main character, from this book. However, I expect to see a major transformation in his life in future. I think the monk will help him to fit into the life of magic which characterizes the powerful people in Voulhire.
