I didn't really enjoy Maido; I didn't like his guts in the story

On the other hand, I really don't like Alabaster. His humor is discomforting.

I could not quite make up my mind about Alabaster, he was such a complicated character that it could go either way.
My favorite in this book was Galen, so innocent and gullible.

My favorite character of the first book (I have and another opinion about the second) would be Meldorath. I don't know what it is about him, but I feel like he is much more relatable than Galan. I would categorize him as a morally grey character, not a villain yet. Yes, he did something wrong, but they didn't even let him explain, didn't even give him a fair trial, just imprisoned him and tried to erase him for existence, saying he was dead. I am not saying he is a good guy, but sadly people tend to fear what they don't understand, and they didn't even give him a chance.
If you hadn't noticed already, I tend to like the mad and broken characters. I like seeing their ark of redemption or their epic downfall, whichever comes first.

I agree with you. Lord Eldus seemed genuinely interested in taking care of his new charges, from the youngest to the eldest. He wanted to do right by them and make their lives better.a_r_egerton wrote: ↑01 Oct 2020, 15:29 Loed Eldus was my favorite character in this installment, and I was rooting for him to succeed in his new assignment. He seemed to be doing everything he could to help the people of Hillport.
Alabaster, by contrast, was utterly loathsome. He had a creepy power that he used for perverse ends.
Alabaster was really creepy...skin crawly creepy!
My greatest accomplishment is that I raised two daughters that love to read.
