Does the opening capture the reader?

I found that the opening got me hooked almost immediately. While it was somewhat violent, I felt that it really created a mystery as to why this was happening, especially by using such a controversial topic as the 'social parties' for children. What did y'all feel about the beginning? Did it capture you immediately, or did it take you a while to get into the book?

The beginning definitely caught my attention and I was hooked right away. I was surprised by it but in a good way. I can't wait to see what the rest of the book will be about.

This is one of the few books that hooked me right from the first page. The manner in which the events unfolded was breath-taking, I couldn't put down the book until I was done. Most authors struggle to build the story slowly but in this one, Matthew Tysz got it right the first time. Hats off to him wherever he is.

The opening scene was definitely captivating. It was different and innovative and made me want to read the rest of the book. Great openings are essential to keep readers enthralled, or else most people will not read beyond the first few chapters if they are not intriguing.

The imagery at the beginning of the book had me hooked! If a book grabs my attention that quickly, I already know it will be amazing!

Omg the opening was so dope. Meldorath is such a badass and the way he blew away the castle and the guards. And its the kind of opening that gets us hooked and wants to read the book in one sitting.

The opening immediately hooked me into the story with the action. However, I was a little disappointed that Meldorath seemed to be painted as the hero despite killing everyone. I thought it was going to be one of those "hero does a bad thing, but for a good reason so all is forgiven" tropes. I was pleasantly surprised and even more interested when his questionable ethics got called out.

It does! It got me hooked, immediately like a fish caught thru a fishook! I'm half way thru the first book, but unfortunately nothing interesting (as the Prologue) is happening. I really hope it gets better though.

The action since at the beginning was a very good call, and I was hooked ! But, after that scene I found the story pretty slow. It gets better after but I was surprised.

It most certainly did capture my attention, despite it being a dark opening.

I think that the wid an amazing job with the prologue as it piqued my interest immediately. Even small details like the mages dancing to use their powers intrigued me as it was such a different take on mythological beings.

I love a book with a backstory that's action-packed, instead of starting slow. The introduction of Meldorath as this powerful mage who is good and bad at the same time really got me excited for where this story will go. I simply loved the start of this book.

I honestly wish the opening had a bit more. It didn't hook me in. Although don't get me wrong, the book itself did hook me.
If I had only read the opening and then decided to read the book or not, id probably not be as interested or invested as I am now.

The opening of this book is captivating. I was hooked right from the beginning. I kept on reading the book to find out what happened next.
