This is a fictional short story by Nikos Kalpakis based in the Greek city of Thessaloniki.

This story follows the inner workings of artist Themis and his struggles with finishing a piece of work that he hopes will be a turning point for him and the city of Thessaloniki. A chord struck with him to paint something different than he had ever done before. Something that had a strong message; something that told those that needed to know that the various disadvantage people would take no more. However the need for him to finish this piece, to make it complete, was so strong that it took over his everyday logic and threw him into turmoil, or perhaps a way into the light? It depends how you look at it. He takes on the Nazis as a form of revenge for their mistreatments of others and along the way, discovers things about himself that might have always been there without him knowing.

I enjoyed reading this short story, however I did find it was a bit too compact. There was too much action all rolled into a very short period of time. I’m not sure it was all necessary to further the plot. The sex scene I thought was out of character (unless this is what the author was trying to achieve) and it was incredible fast paced. It made it seem like Themis was the type of guy that did this all the time, but from the back story I got, he seemed to just stay away from encounters with girls. One other note would be that I wasn’t quite sure what date/era this was set in. I tried to figure it out, but I had no luck.

The beginning of the story I got a very Tim Burton kind of feel. I could see it all playing out in a macabre, dark, almost comic strip kind of way and then somewhere in the middle it shifted to a Tarantino feel. Which made it interesting. The action near the end with the Nazis was exciting and it was the first time in the story that I was feeling anticipation for what was about to happen. The story did intrigue me and made me wonder what his life had been like the few months leading up to this climatic point. I felt compassion and empathy for Themis and that is a great thing to feel for a character and the story.

The only other critique I’d say would be the spelling and grammer. There were quite a few mistakes in that department, so having someone go over and edit it would definitely help. I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars because I did enjoy the storyline and the action near the end, however it did drag at times and there were several English spelling mistakes and grammer.
