Review of Backstory
Backstory by William Michael Ried is a fiction that revolves around the lives of one-time college students, Ansel, Tess, Bud, Dutch, Charlie, and Molly. They are finding their feet in their new lives. It’s been years apart, with each doing very well in various areas of their lives. A reunion brings them back together after years of being apart. The comeback revealed more than was expected. Ansel is laced in a mystery, which others try to unravel. Could there be more to Ansel’s life, or were they digging a mine with no gold? An incident leaves everyone on edge, but one is a suspect. Who would it be?
This work is a masterpiece. At first, I sincerely thought I was hooked on another boring book with unorganized thoughts. However, as I read on and unraveled the plot, I was lost in the piece. I enjoyed the author’s use of the unique tool of imagery. The scenes were made so real that I could see the images play out. Each time the author described Ansel, there was the imagery of how gorgeous and perfectly structured his body was.
Also, when the reunion was mentioned, the pictures of a beautifully outlined room setting with the chairs and mouth-watering dishes were the picture that came to mind. The description of the cars of Ansel and Charlie was such that it immediately struck a picture of what they looked like. I could go on and on. The author intentionally left a mental picture with each sentence and reading, making the book more interesting. Furthermore, each chapter is structurally embedded in a perfect blend of anger, resentment, love, hatred, excitement, and displeasure.
There was a use of suspense. For instance, when Tess was involved in the crash, it was not very easy to figure out what exactly happened and how bad the crash was. The reader is left to figure out if she had died or would be fine. I particularly loved the author’s ability to take the audience from one chapter to another without losing thought of what the previous chapter was about, thereby leaving the reader yearning to read on. The perfect plot organization is commendable.
Some readers may have a hard time with the extent of vulgarity used in the book. I don't have any problem with this, anyway. Hence, I don't see any negative issues with the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, considering the positive aspects. It is an intriguing read. It appears professionally edited, with some errors. I recommend this book to suspense lovers, crime investigators, and detectives, crime story lovers. If you love a mind-opening adventure, read Backstory.
