When hit by a string of endless problems that we feel flatfooted, we begin questioning our sanity. Such issues cause us to lose the last iota of trust in others. The pain is overwhelming that we become bitter and cannot muster the courage to tell our stories. It is what hit Shenelle, a sister to Jere and Tim.

When Shenelle was a toddler, she witnessed signs that their mother and Tim did not love her. She once walked into her parents engaged in a heated argument one evening. To her mom, Shenelle was the reason she received little attention from her husband. This made her consider Shenelle her rival in disguise. Things got out of hand when her parents divorced on infidelity grounds. Her mom was depressed. To hide from tribulations, she sought solace in drugs. Shenelle could not stand the beatings from their estranged mother and left to live with her friend Alicia. The two schooled together and became inseparable. Shenelle later experienced the first heartbreak with Caesar when he left her to be with another girl. Gary came in next. Despite promising herself never to trust men, Caesar won her heart. The affair ended abruptly when Caesar and his friend tried to rape her. How does she end up falling for Darryl?

I loved the ability of Weathered Storms to evoke emotions. D. E. Parker, the author, weaved a story that elicits emotions by allowing the reader to connect with the characters at a personal level. Shenelle’s story kept me wondering why someone could grapple with incessant misfortunes despite doing nothing wrong to warrant them. The only undoing was trusting people. I appreciated that Parker highlighted the importance of having a support system by introducing Alice, Natari, and Hannah to the fray. The crew stuck together during and after studies. They were a call away. I liked how Parker portrayed the effects of fear. It affected Shenelle Patterson’s mental health that she felt running away from Virginia was a solution.

What I disliked about this book was its redundancy. Since the story unfolds in Dr. Mayes' office, I felt that some details about some parties were mundane. For instance, the backgrounds of Shenelle’s friends come to light. While it aids the plot, I found it less pertinent because they wheeled little impact on Shenelle’s conundrums. The mundane details further slowed the pace of this book.

I rate this book three out of four stars. I deduct a point for the reasons stated above. It is an emotional-gripping novel that informs the reader of the importance of fighting even when it hurts.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in romance novels. I believe another round of professional editing is necessary to expunge the grammatical errors. The errors present did not affect my reading experience.

Some people just shouldn’t be parents and Shanelle’s seem like some of those. I’m glad that she has friends that she can trust even if it’s difficult for her.

What’s with some families? How can a daughter be a rival to the mother? Wonderful review though. Thank you.

Despite the redundancy, this book seems like a worthwhile read and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

In a world when people expect everyone to put a fake thick skin around their sensitive demeanor, the narrative showcases how such efforts are disregarded and demeaned by people who were the most trusted in the victims' life. This story portrays how one falls prey into the beaks of vultures in the skeleton of humans and still tries to look towards the rising sun and finally emerges victorious.
