Official Review: Affinities by Chris Hollis

Post by latesummer »

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Affinities" by Chris Hollis.]

A mind-boggling, yet suspenseful book. This is exactly how I would describe Affinities by Chris Hollis. After reading the blurb of this book online, I was quickly intrigued and knew that I had to read it. Suspenseful thriller books have always caught my attention – and this is exactly what Affinities is in a nutshell.

Andrew Goodwin is just an ordinary guy who is moving on with his life after separating from his wife. He has a crummy, cramped flat and a new girlfriend who isn’t all that perfect either. The kicker about Andrew’s life though, is that it ends every night. After months of dealing with his nighttime deaths, Andrew’s life begins to be turned upside down too. He begins waking up to bruises and a loss of memory. In hopes to discover what is happening to him, Andrew takes desperate measures – including recording his own movements. Eventually, he meets Ryan – a man who tells him what is really going on and who is causing his life to be ruined.

Chris has created a fast-paced, heart-stopping storyline. Told in the third person omniscient point-of-view, you get to discover every character’s thoughts and motives. However, the suspense factor always sits in the background. As Chris switches between characters and their stories, he helps you to form a love-hate relationship with each one of them. You are constantly pulled in several directions, which seems to represent the way Andrew feels throughout the entire book. I have never in my life read a book like this one. Usually you either love or hate each character, but Chris Hollis has found a way to make you love each character in one moment and despise them in the next. It is definitely a technique I would like to see used more often in books.

The main thing that really bothered me about this book was the ending. I was so unhappy with the way this book ended. However, with a quick Google search, I discovered that the story isn’t over after all, as this is only the first book. So, I will definitely be getting the next one; and if you read Affinities, I strongly suggest you get it as well when it comes out. One more thing that I’d like to address is the English inconsistencies. Oftentimes, the book would use British English spellings, while at other times, it would use American English spellings. I think if you write a book, you need to at least be consistent in the spellings.

Overall, Affinities by Chris Hollis is a fantastic paranormal type thriller that suspense junkies will enjoy completely. This book will keep you on your toes from cover to cover. It is definitely a book that will stick with me for a long time to come and I cannot wait for the second book to be released. This book had such a strong storyline, but due to the English inconsistencies, I give this book 3.5 stars out of 4.

Hello rosess,

I've actually never read the Picture of Dorian Gray. It's on my very long "to read" list, but as of yet, I can't say that I do prefer one over the other as I've not read one of the two yet.

Best Regards,
Latesummer
