Review of Buck Hill Falls
Can a family be said to be complete without the presence of a father? Buck Hill Falls: One Summer Lasts Forever by Ned Hentz is a 137-page book about the journey of a boy named Danny as he becomes an adult. It explores the themes of family, love, and life.
Daniel Barnes looks forward to life after high school even though he has no idea what the future holds. He lived with his mother, who was in her early forties and worked as a receptionist in a home heating oil company. He never met his father because he disappeared immediately after his birth. A day after his eighteenth birthday, he met with Bob Robertson, an attorney who was also a friend to his father. He offered him a job at a camp which he accepted, and this was where he met Veronica, Julian, etc. Life at the camp was slightly different from what he was used to since this was the first time he would be away from home. Will he get the answer he desires? Read this book to find out.
The book was written in a seamless flow. This allows readers to read the happenings in the book as a whole. This is admirable because it eliminates intermissions that would have disrupted the flow. For instance, the transition of Daniel Barnes from rounding off high school to him getting a job and leaving home for the first time was easy to follow. What I loved most about Daniel Barnes was his accommodating spirit. Although he was hurt about Veronica hiding a fact from him, it did not stop him from coming to her aid when he thought she was in trouble.
Charlene Klotz only appeared once in the book, but I learned a lot from her character. I learned that value could come from anywhere, even from where you least expected it. She was the meekest person in the camp and had not excelled at anything all summer, but in this one aspect, she was a winner. This was a result of not giving up. I dislike nothing in the book, although I would have loved it if the author had shed more light on Daniel's father and whereabouts. What happened to him was not clear.
In addition, the plot was easy to comprehend, and I enjoyed reading the book. The writing style of the author is easy to understand. I noticed many grammatical errors in the book that disrupted my reading enjoyment. Therefore, I rate Buck Hill Falls: One Summer Lasts Forever 3 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend the book to people who are scared to try out new things and wallow in doubt. The book will enlighten individuals on what it means to step outside their comfort zone.
