Set in the 1840s, Robert McKinley goes down to Portsmouth for a few days to work on some paintings. Whilst there, he becomes enthralled by one of the actresses at the local theatre. She works for the Prospero Company, which involves actors performing with puppets. Due to their busy schedule, McKinley never saw her again. Until one day, he gets the opportunity to paint the members of the Prospero Company. When McKinley invites the company to stay with him and his friends for a few weeks, strange things start happening. Things that McKinley finds difficult to explain to his friends. The owner is hiding a dark secret about his puppets, and one that will have McKinley travelling throughout England to track him down. Will McKinley be able to find the owner and put a stop to him before he hurts people? Read Fallen Angels by Vicky Fox to find out.

After a very slow start, the book picked up the pace halfway through. Being the second book in the trilogy, I had no problem understanding what was happening, so it is a book that can be read on its own. My favourite character was the protagonist, McKinley. McKinley’s kindness and need to help others is very inspiring. It was interesting to see McKinley overcome his internal challenges. He was placed in a difficult situation whereby he had to choose between two people that he dearly loved. More than that, I enjoyed the subtle element of mystery that Fox presented with the puppets. I found myself wanting to keep reading more to find out what would happen to them.

In terms of character growth, I think Fox did a great job at writing Mariel. As readers, we get to see her go from this timid, young girl into a confident, fearless woman, who can stand up for herself. As someone who enjoys creating art, I really liked that Fox centred this book around it. Fox described the character’s artwork in such great detail that I could vividly picture it in my mind.

There isn’t anything that I disliked about the book, apart from the fact that it was a slow starter. I encourage you to keep reading because it will get better as the story goes on. Since this is the second book in the series, I am looking forward to seeing what Fox puts out next.

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the points I mentioned above. I didn’t find any mistakes, so it is exceptionally edited. Due to some sexual references, I think this book is appropriate for adults. If you are into traditional art and romance, then I recommend giving this one a go.

As per the review the way the suspense is built-up in this book is really commendable. Seems to be a good choice for reading. Thanks for the excellent review.

That was an excellent review. I don't like slow starts but since the book picks up, it's an interesting book, with the idea of suspense it's a great book. I wonder if Mckinley was able to help the people being hurt

I have mixed feeling about this novel because it's not my favorite period but the story seems engaging with some well-developed elements, so I might give it a try. Thank you for your great review!
