D Wolf by Donald K. Harris is a crime thriller about a beast that kills for reasons other than hunger. Papago Indian Reservation is located outside the small town of Meacon, Arizona. The beast’s first victim is a photographer taking pictures of the desert on the Papago Indian Reservation, and the second victim is a black Angus bull. The first one found was the bull on Jeff Watkins’s ranch. Jeff knows the bull belongs to his neighbor, who will probably take him to court for the animal’s death, so he calls Sheriff Wally. After Sheriff Wally documents the mutilated animal’s body, he calls Bob Bernoit, the game warden. Bob notices something strange about the paw prints, so he makes casts and takes pictures of them. He takes these items to Professor Wilcox at the Vera College for an opinion. What did Bob notice? Who is Professor Wilcox, and what is his opinion? What is this beast, and why does Bob call it a “D Wolf?”

Donald Harris’s descriptive writing allowed me to visualize the desert scenery of flowers, heat waves, sand, gullies, and caves. There are many characters in this book, and they are fully developed. I appreciate that the author portrayed each female character as a strong individual. Donald Harris did an excellent job switching back and forth between the beast and simultaneously giving information about the other characters. Among all the gory mutilations of the beast’s kills, he has included a romance, which was refreshing. The plot of this book shows how important teamwork is. My favorite takeaway from this book is “if you treat a teenager like an adult, then he or she will act like one.”

The spelling inconsistencies are the only negative aspect of this book. It was like the author did not know which way the correct way was to spell a word, so he switched back and forth. This inconsistency resulted in a lot of errors in this book. One example is “Courthouse” versus “Court House.” Either one can be considered correct, but it needs to be consistent. A professional editor could have helped Mr. Harris with this.

I have no choice but to give this enjoyable book 3 out of 4 stars because of the lack of professional editing. If Mr. Harris decides to have this book professionally edited, it will deserve the maximum star rating.

Mature fans of crime thrillers over 18 years of age are the recommended audience for this book. The book is not appropriate for younger or sensitive readers because of the gory content, non-borderline profanity, and sexual content. The little bit of religious content will probably not be offensive to most readers as it is words like “Thank you, Lord” and “Bless you.”

The book seems to present an intriguing and gripping crime story with diverse themes such as romance, teamwork, and nature. However, I'm a bit put off by the many gory descriptions that the book contains, but this could be an exciting aspect for other readers. Thank you for this insightful review!

this is a book that can boost imagination as one goes through intriguing events. I find it interesting about imaginary creatures the harm and danger they cause. This is a great book for me. Thanks for the review.

I usually like neither gore or romance in the books that I read. However, I do like thrillers. I wonder what Professor Wilcox can find about this beast.

Due to its content this book does not seem to fit me. I guess people who enjoy thrillers are better suited for it. Thanks for your detailed review!

Catching such a beast will definitely be a difficult exercise which is only possible with the team work of good proportion. Nice review, thanks.
