Review of Georgia, From the Shadows
Do you like a good scare? Foster Campbell has written a collection of twenty-two short stories in his book Georgia, From The Shadows. This compilation of tales is set in cities around Georgia and is not for the faint of heart. Within these short stories, the reader will find a variety of topics; some include the supernatural, horror, suicide, murder, psychological thriller, mental illness, among others. The tales can be both terrifying and captivating.
The story that frightened me the most was the second tale called “Chattooga River.” The author described two friends, Jason and Benny, who were going on a canoe trip. As they were driving along a road, they observed a woman with her arms outstretched. Jason commented that her outfit looked like it was from another century. At that point, Benny slid down in his seat, utterly terrified. Something was not right with this woman. The two friends decided to shake it off and continued to their destination. Little did they know there was a legend about this particular woman. What would happen if you saw her? Chilling and creepy are the best ways to describe this unusual story.
I love a good horror story, and these tales did not disappoint me. Most of the stories were exciting and thought-provoking; once I finished a tale, I was eager to start the next one. I found the stories to be perfect in length and sufficiently wrapped up at the end. The occasional humor was also appreciated, especially where the stories were dark. This book was hard to put down; I always wanted to know what would happen next.
There was nothing about this book that I disliked. The stories were original and unlike anything I had ever read before. The tales were quick to read, and they held my attention throughout the entire book. I especially enjoyed the unexpected twists and the shocking revelations at the end of some stories.
The twenty-two short stories were entertaining and engaging. I was both terrified and intrigued at the same time. I appreciated how Foster Campbell added just enough detail without going too far. A few of these tales will stay with me for a while. For these reasons, I rate Georgia, From The Shadows 4 out of 4 stars.
Most of the stories were unsettling, downright creepy, violent, and disturbing. Due to the various frightening themes, sensitive readers may find these subjects bothersome. I recommend this work of fiction to adults who enjoy horror stories that will generate a good scare.
