Review of Going South
Harry Watts is tired of the mundane life he is living. He realizes that he has stagnated and hates his life. Harry decides he needs a fresh start and comes up with an insurance scam plan that involves him and his wife Lena faking his death. Lena reluctantly agrees to it after losing her nursing job at the psychiatric hospital.
The plan is to go to Mexico under the guise of vacationing and find someone identical to Harry. They are supposed to kill him and pass him off as Harry. However, things take a turn for Harry when he realizes the severity of his actions after executing his plan. Will Harry and Lena be able to live with what they have done? Will they get away with it? You will have to grab a copy of Going South to find out.
Tom Larsen did a fantastic job with writing Going South. I found it to be both entertaining and relatable. Maybe to a degree, readers can relate to feeling stuck and possibly unhappy with their lives like the characters. I honestly could not get enough of this book. The story took me through a roller coaster of emotions ranging from happiness to sadness and everything in-between.
To me the first half of the book felt lighter and more comical. The second half of the book had a more dark and heavy feel. I could tell that the author did a lot of planning and research for this book. The story did not seem rushed, and the sequence of events flowed perfectly. Also, I love how well described everything is. I’ve never been to Mexico or France, but I could picture the locations described in the story.
I love that there was a lot of character development. It helped me care more for the characters. I initially did not connect with Harry’s character. He came across as impulsive, stubborn, and selfish. As the story progresses, readers see that he has a conscience and cares about Lena despite everything he puts her through. The ending was bittersweet because I wanted things to work out for him. I also found myself scared for Lena’s safety because she always seemed to get the short end of the stick in matters concerning her husband. Lena was constantly cleaning up Harry’s messes, and I wanted more for her character.
The story had so many exciting twists it was hard to predict how it would end. The ending tied up everything for me. I genuinely enjoyed reviewing this book, and I did not find anything that warranted a negative critique. I love Going South so much that I will be getting myself a hard copy for my personal collection.
In conclusion, I am giving Going South a score of 4 out of 4 stars. It would be an injustice to score this book anything less than a perfect four-star rating. It is well written and has a captivating storyline. I did find anything that warranted a star deduction. I also noticed that the book was well edited. I did not find any errors while reviewing it.
I recommend Going South to readers who adore crime fiction. If you have ever felt tired of life and found yourself scheming ways of escape Going South is the perfect way for you. This book is not suitable for young readers because of the general mature nature of its content.
