Over the Devil’s Back takes place in a close-knit community in South Carolina. One central character is Will Remington, a highly successful banker who owns a large mansion. A young boy named Leander is close friends with Will’s granddaughter, and he becomes privy to a terrible crime that takes place on Will’s land. Leander feels compelled to keep it a secret for reasons that are revealed in the story. Although crime is at the heart of the plot, the book also builds out the stories of the characters, their dramas, and their connections with each other. Melva Haggar Dye created an interesting and compelling book.

Dye is a wonderful storyteller with a gift for weaving together an engaging narrative. I love books that instantly draw you into the story, and I found that this book was successful in doing so. The plot is memorable with intriguing characters. I liked how the author portrayed Leander. He is a smart, likable guy who finds himself in the challenging situation of having to maintain a dark secret. It was interesting to see how this challenge played out for him. The author was effective in creating interest for each of the characters she included in the book. I enjoyed that this was a multi-dimensional book, and it had enough complexity to make it interesting.

I didn’t have any significant criticisms of the book. There were many characters to follow, so I had to pay attention to keep their individual stories straight. However, I liked that element of the book as it made it more interesting. Readers who don’t have the patience to maintain interest over time might prefer a shorter book. This book was quite lengthy. I didn’t mind this aspect since the story held my attention. Readers should also note that the book includes characters who can be described as racist. This factors into the stories of certain characters and how it impacts their relationships with others.

Over the Devil’s Back is an entertaining read. It’s also extremely well-edited. This book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars based on my comments above.

I recommend this book to adult readers who like novels with suspense, intrigue, and good character development. This is a great book to escape into, and it’s also one that you can savor over time.

Will Leander be able to keep the crime he witnessed a secret? How will this impact his life and those around him? If you’re curious to know more, this is a book you’ll want to explore.
