Review of Murder at the Blue Ox Inn
Jesse L. Isfet’s novel Murder at the Blue Ox Inn is set in the Olympic National Park in Washington. In this engaging murder mystery, the environmentalists are engaged in a battle against the entrepreneurs who seek to profit from cutting down the forest. There’s an interesting cast of characters, including Mike Stier, a park ranger living in a station situated next door to the Blue Ox Inn. There’s Kathy Dunlap, the owner of thousands of acres of timberland and a few mills. She’s a calculating woman who has continued to grow her empire. Professor Baptiste is a staunch environmentalist who sneaks his students into the forest at night to try to protect it from logging. Paul Anderson reluctantly works at the Blue Ox Inn as he waits for a promising job at the sawmill to become available. The motivations and challenges of each of these and other characters come together in an intriguing plot. Things come to a head when the Blue Ox Inn hosts two conferences at the same time. This situation stirs up controversy between the environmentalists and the loggers. There’s plenty of drama that transpires in this entertaining book.
Isfet is a talented writer with a knack for setting the scene for the events which later unfold. He effectively paints the picture of a remote wooded forest that would be a tranquil place if not for the heated battle that is taking place between those who want to protect the forest and those who want to profit from it. There’s a variety of characters, each with their backstory. This makes Murder at the Blue Ox Inn an interesting read. When the murder takes place, the complex web of characters adds to the mystery surrounding who might have done it. I enjoyed this story. It had a smooth flow and a nice pace. I appreciated the challenge of trying to sort out various clues to the crime.
I didn’t have any major criticisms of the book. It held my attention and kept me intrigued. The book seemed like the right length to maintain interest from beginning to end. I felt like there was the right amount of complexity to keep me guessing.
Murder at the Blue Ox Inn is entertaining to read. It’s also exceptionally well edited. I didn’t find any errors. Based on my comments above, I gave this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to those who like stories with an element of mystery. You'll particularly appreciate the plot if you’re interested in environmental causes.
Who was responsible for the murder? What was their real motivation? Will they get away with it, or will they be caught? This is a book that you’ll want to check out.
