Official Review: Torture by Cody Alan Reel

Post by Shadowed_Gates »

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Torture" by Cody Alan Reel.]

Torture is a fictional horror by Cody Alan Reed. WARNING: This book is incredibly graphic and disturbing. Thankfully, I have a strong stomach. The problem with this book is that there is more gore than an actual well thought out plot. It seems to be written purely for shock factor. For this, I give it 1 out of 4 stars.

The story was summed up as two things, the story of a sexually troubled man and a story between a father and son. Sounded odd to me at first and after reading this, it still is.

Your featured characters are Johnson and Matt Ginner. This is your father and son duo. They live in an area in Canada called Manic and like most Canadian natives, hockey is a love. Except that Matt isn’t as into hockey as his dad is. Matt has a fondness for math and poker, especially when you can combine the two to make money. Joseph would rather have his son be the next big NHL player, being scouted from a game on the nearby pond that’s been turned into an ice rink. It is behind this pond that our real story begins. The mysterious grey house beyond the hills, who and what does it hold?

It holds an awful lot, including our main character, and his son. He isn’t all that mysterious to the people of Manic. In fact, he is well liked and a respected businessman. Of course they have no idea what vile and disgusting things he does when his mask is no longer in place. He is a sociopath in its purest form. There is rape, murder, cannibalism, and torture. All of this taking place in that mysterious house and all in front of his son.

It isn’t until more than halfway through this book that all of our characters finally cross. From that point on, our story speeds up into a rather sloppy and silly climax.

The other problem with this book is that it just did not flow well at all. It would either stay on one character far too long, or bounce between them at the most random parts. I feel that this could have been a great thriller had the characters been fleshed out more. As it stands, it just reads as a shock piece and after a while, it fails to even do that.
