Review of Deeply in the Soul
Deeply in the Soul is a gripping crime novel by Hristina Bloomfield. Set in Vedna, it follows the life of 28-year-old Xena as she runs away from a mess created by her boyfriend, Ivan. Xena realizes that her boyfriend, Ivan, took a loan from Long One and used her as collateral. Long One is like Vedna's patriarch, and nothing happens in the town without his knowledge and permission. His men have infiltrated the town, including law enforcement; it is nearly impossible to go against him without him catching and punishing you. Now, Ivan failed to pay him. He had to take Xena as they had agreed before, as he also participated in human trafficking. Upon learning for the first time that Ivan had pledged her against a loan, Xena was shocked beyond belief. How could Ivan, one of the few people she trusted the most, do this to her? Where will she go? Who will save her? What will Ivan's fate be? Bitterness and questions aside, now she had to think fast about how to save her life.
The author did not waste time introducing the conflict of the story. This set the pace quickly, giving the readers the story's bearing early enough. Starting the story on such a high note kept me glued as I waited to uncover Xena's fate and how the events would transpire. I also liked how the author expertly organized the sequence of events in this story. More often than not, I couldn't help but marvel at the fact that there seemed to be the right people at the right moments. This must have needed good planning and shows how good a storyteller the author is. A good story is not without well-fleshed-out characters, and this was no exception. I liked that their backgrounds were both sufficiently given and at the right moments. This made me understand what motivated their actions and shaped their personalities. The book also had pleasant surprises, which were hard to guess until they happened. All this, together with a satisfactory ending, enhanced my literary journey into this exquisite novel.
What I liked the most about this book were the themes covered. The author, through the characters, explored the themes of poverty, hunger, and childhood wounds, showing the effect they can have on an individual. I found some of the characters' approaches to curbing these common societal problems relatable and admirable. Anyone who has had to think hard or risk losing a roof over their head and starving to death will relate to those scenes.
Overall, I immensely enjoyed this read; the only negatives were the errors I found. The number of errors made me deduct a star to give it four out of five stars. I would have definitely given it the perfect score if not for the errors. Another round of editing is needed to make it reach perfection.
I highly recommend this to fans of crime, romance, and investigative stories. There are profanities and sexual content, making it suitable for a mature audience. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more from the author.
