Review of True Self
The book True Self by M.L. Singh is a supernatural fantasy about a young intern doctor called Thandeka Kollo who has ancestral supernatural powers. When her cousin Thulee, who works as a constable, seeks Deka's help on a violent murder, she realizes that whatever is going on is not a normal jealous boyfriend revenge murder but rather something a lot bigger and much more dark and dangerous. So she decides to help her cousin, only to find herself facing a very strong supernatural family that uses black magic as a tool to gain power and eliminate anyone they think is a threat. So what kind of issues will Deka and her cousin face, and will she be able to embrace her powers and use them to protect her family and the greater good? You have to read the book to find out.
What I liked about the book was the originality of the story line and the names of the characters. They were new and not so common in the publishing world. Though Thandeka is a science girl who only believes in facts she can see and analyze, she has to believe in her powers to be able to use her full potential. That's what made the story more interesting: even though she has the powers, she doesn't believe in them at first but gradually starts believing in how strong she is and uses that to help save her town from the evil dark magic it's facing.
There wasn't much that I didn't like about the book; it kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next to the Kono family and if they would survive the dark power of the old evil man. Even though magical fantasy books are common, I felt this one had an original side to it. And the plot wasn't so repetitive and similar to other novels of the same genre.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5. It was very exciting and thrilling, especially that romantic connection Thandeka had with the police chief, which added a soft side to the story, which I liked. The editing was also exceptionally good, since I didn't find any errors.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy supernatural fantasies, especially ones with a female protagonist. The book is suitable for all ages because it doesn't contain any explicit scenes or severe profanity.
