Official Review: Jeremy's Heart and other stories
"Jeremy's heart and other stories" is a collection featuring 10 haunting stories of horror and suspense. Short stories and the horror genre aren't my usual cup or tea. However, the first story looked promising, so I have decided to give it a shot and didn't regret it.
So what are the stories about?
The Mystery of Feller's Road – Tells the story of a man who has decided to take a short cut through Feller's Road, contrary to his wife wishes, and enters the twilight zone.
I liked the story but found an inconsistency. The police officer mentioned in the story is about 30 years old. At one point the police officer said he has been an officer for around 30 years. After a few lines he said he has been on the force for 10 years, which seems much more logical.
Jeremy's Heart - A ballplayer is approached by a shadowy agent offering him the deal of a life time. He should have read the small print…
One is the Other – A murderer is on the run. On his way to L.A, he stops in Denver and that will lead to his downfall.
I couldn't connect to the hero at all and though he got his just deserts.
Mauer's Funeral Home –A mortician gets caught in the net of the zombie masters.
A Pumpkin Story – The story is about a pumpkin the like you never saw. One would never look at pumpkins the same way again…
Butterflies – A swarm of butterflies invade the Metropolitan Museum causing havocs.
This story also had a consistency problem. The author started with a third person view. In the middle of the story the tense changed to the first person and then returned back to the third.
Johnny's House – A couple wants to buy a house in the country and encounter their own twist version of Elm street.
What is Fear? You will discover the real meaning of fear in the Funhouse from Hell.
El Diablo – A bank robber has to deal with his demons.
The story started with a bang and ended with a whimper.
Another Time, Another Place – A guardian angel unites a family in this touching story.
A good short story is one that flair, original, re-readability. It provokes and even shock and grab the reader attention right from start. Most of the stories in this book met the bill. However, the stories weren't in the same level. Most of the stories were good, but some were pretty weak. Overall, I enjoyed the stories, so I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
I give points to the author for the writing, the execution and the originality of some of the stories. Some stories were brutal, so may not suit all audience. Some of the stories should be edited and I mentioned their problems above.
I liked the fact that although this is a collection of short stories, they weren’t too short and had depth. The stories were concise and well developed in most parts. The characters were well-drawn and felt genuine and realistic. The author clearly has a talent and I would be happy to read more of his books. I recommend the book to lovers of the genre.
