Review of The Buchanan Bastard
The Buchanan Bastard by Dedra L. Stevenson is set in the South. Jack Buchanan III was a wealthy oil tycoon who had an affair with Coral, who lived in a trailer park. Coral became pregnant, and Jack agreed to marry her, but only briefly. He set Coral up with money to open her own restaurant, and they divorced. The baby, Brian, lived with Coral until he was fifteen and then went to live with Jack. Jack groomed Brian to take over and run Buchanan Oil. One day, Jack’s plane went down in the desert near Saudi Arabia. Jack went missing and was declared legally dead after a while. Brian took over Buchanan Oil.
Brian married Laura Lynn Beauford, and soon, they were expecting a little one. Brian was not feeling well one day, so Laura attended an event for him. As soon as she returned to their hotel room, Laura found Brian and an unknown woman sitting up in bed, both naked and shot dead. Laura found the gun on the floor and picked it up. As the police arrived, they saw Laura holding the pistol in her hand and standing over the two bodies. Laura was immediately arrested for murder and sent to jail. Laura called her father, Larry, who is not only a lawyer but also a mayor. Read the book to find out if Laura did, indeed, kill Brian, but who is the mysterious woman in bed with him? Who is Vlad The Impaler and Natasha? Where is Jack? Did he die, or did he reappear suddenly?
The Buchanan Bastard was a very fascinating book. All of the characters in the book are an integral part of the storyline. There were a lot of twists and turns in the plot, and it kept me intrigued as to what would happen next. I had a lot of empathy for Laura as she went through a lot. It was amazing how she went through all that but could contain her pregnancy through to the end. Her father, Larry, was determined to help his daughter even though he was dying of cancer. The book shows that determination and sheer willpower will get you through tragedies in your life.
The book, The Buchanan Bastard, is for those who like to read romance/mystery stories. The author’s writing style was effortless. It was well-edited, and although I did find a few errors, it was not enough to distract me from the story. I wholeheartedly give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is a book that I highly recommend, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
