Daddy's Gone A Hunting - Mary Higgins Clark

Post by SarahPapesh »

I think it is safe to say I enjoy a mystery/thriller book quite frequently. I actually grabbed this book quickly off of the shelf when my husband and I were leaving the library the other day because I knew I didn’t have anything to read. It was just sitting there on display, so I thought, eh, why not?

First of all, I really did enjoy the book. It kept me guessing the ENTIRE time. It wasn’t until the end of the book that I finally was given any information as to anything that happened – and I was definitely surprised. The author definitely deserves kudos for that, because, as any avid reader knows, it is hard to trick book lovers.

I think what I most enjoyed about this book was the fact that it was a compilation of different characters and events that all tie together in the end. I did not expect it, but it made it more fun to read the book. The reader was constantly going back and forth and getting a piece of each of their lives – what a whirlwind!

Obviously, Mary Higgins Clark is a well –known author, so I am certain that nothing less would be expected of her. However, I have not ready many of her works in the past – a few here and there – and I can honestly state that I did not know what to expect for this particular book.

One thing that bugged me the most was actually not the story, or even the author’s writing; poor-editing was a huge downfall of this book. This book was published very recently, written by a reputable author, and it came from a popular publishing house. Please tell me, then, why did I find so many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors present throughout the story? (No, it wasn’t written from a perspective to require such errors – they were mistakes simple enough, but there were several of them). Yes, I know I make mistakes here and there – we all do. However, when you run a book through that many tiers before it gets to publishing, mistakes should be virtually undetectable. The reader does not like have to go back and check what was just read to “fix it” in their mind. Very disappointing.

Overall, though, I liked the book. I would recommend to someone who wants some entertainment. Not complicated by any means, it is a quick and easy read to put on the nightstand before bed.

My rating – 3 stars. I would have given it a 4 if there weren’t the mistakes.

I like reading Mary Higgins Clark's books so I would most likely enjoy this book. I have read books that have had errors in them and it's weird to see them. You would think someone would catch the mistakes. Great review on the book.

I have a friend that's trying to read every book she wrote. Maybe I could borrow this one from her.

Do you know how many books she has written? That sounds like a cool task - I have always wanted to pick an author and do that.

I really enjoy Mary Higgins Clark and I look forward to picking this book up soon. I always love the way she keeps you in the dark the whole way through and then ties everything together so neatly at the end. Just when you think you have it figured out, she throws you a loop! The number of mistakes is disturbing though. How can this happen?!

I have read all of her older books (before 2008ish), but I've had a big issue with her more recent ones. I was a huge fan, but starting with Two Little Girls in Blue, I think it was, she switched to writing in first person and I just didn't get into them in the same way that I did with her early books. After a few of them, I quit reading her new releases. I still own most of the ones I bought in high school, but I haven't read her in years. I think the poor editing is part of the same problem. She has built up a fantastic (and well deserved) reputation, and she is banking on that to keep selling her current books. Like I said though, I haven't bothered in a while, so maybe her newest books are better?
