The book I read is Hawthorn Cottage by R. L. McCallum. It is a mystery/thriller. It is also a fictional account. The theme of the book is that hearsay is not always the best way to determine truths.

This book takes place in the 1800’s in a small town in England. Alexander is a professor and knowledgeable man who is also connected to the world of spirits. He is an author and likes a good mystery. Alexander is also well off. He leaves his home in London to try to have a relaxing time at a home he has rented, called Hawthorn Cottage. Upon entering the town, he realizes something fishy is going on. It appears that the cottage that he intends to rent is feared by most of the people of the town. He and his housekeeper move in anyways and start to unravel a mystery about seven sisters who went missing after living in the house. Also, he learns about another family who lived there after the seven sisters went missing. They were found murdered.

The people of the town don’t like the sisters, claiming they were whores and a disgrace to the Catholic community. Alexander sees the ghosts of a few of the sisters and starts to unravel the mystery of their disappearance. He believes that the town rumors about the girls may be false and he intends to get down to the bottom of their disappearance.

I thought this book was pretty interesting and also well written. It was both memorable and entertaining. All the events made it hard to put down. It kept me guessing from start to finish. There was only one issue I had with the book, which was the very end. Although most problems are resolved, one thing is left out and it left me feeling as though I did not solve the whole mystery.

I would give the book a three out of four stars. It was pretty good in writing and in content. The only reason I would not give it four stars is because I have read other books which I consider better reads. Although this was entertaining, it was not something I would like to read again. Books that I would read multiple times are books I would consider four star worthy. Overall, I would recommend it to others as a good, quick read.
