Mademoiselle Maupin by James Frost follows the existence of two unique individuals who had to come together to take down a common foe. Julie d’Aubigny is a renowned opera diva who has had vampiric contagions running through her blood since her death five decades ago and Arnold Brennan is a devoted clergyman who associates evil with man’s insubordination to the commandment of God.

Julie wants to avenge the death of her lover and Arnold is in search of the truth surrounding his father’s murder. Driven by these goals, these two individuals, together with their companions, will have to fight against inhuman forces. Will they come out successful?

This is not your cliche vampire novel. James Frost was able to incorporate so much information into the basic profile of a vampire. He shows that they are more than just blood-sucking creatures. There was so much to know about their history. His style of writing will transport you straight back to the 18th century with his use of description and language. It is as if you are strolling the dim, hazy roads of London yourself, encompassed by an obscure, fanged hunter. The historical setting was vivid. It was obviously meticulously researched, as notices of world events were discussed naturally.

I adored how Christianity was depicted in this book. It depicts God as the illumination of the world and how He will save us from the dark forces if we call on His name with faith in us. As regards characterization, Julie has to be my favorite character. It's only one time out of every odd day that you come across strong female leads, especially in the world of the supernatural. I love how James Frost has written the female characters to be strong individuals who make their mark on the world in their own way. Her character wasn’t just strong but also logical. She knew when to follow her heart and when to use her brain. This book ended in a cliffhanger following her logical decision and I am looking forward to what book two will have in store for us.

I rate this book 5 out of 5. It was well written and constructed. It has a dignified pace, which made me totally captivated and bolted. I couldn't rate it lower since this book has no notable negatives.

I recommend this book to those who are interested in vampires and mystery novels. People who enjoy gothic novels will love this too.

This novel is really incredibly queer for something written 200 years ago. It's interesting to me to see how people from other times and cultures conceptualized what we would now call gay relationships and transness. Obviously, Gautier is someone whose attitudes on these things weren't altogether typical of French society in his day-- he belonged to the Romantic subculture, he probably slept with other men

A novel written using and old style which at the same time goes beyond cliches about vampires seems interesting. I'll look into this series. Thank you for your great review!
