Two women are found stuffed into suitcases buried in a pile of rocks, one with the letter Y covering the remaining skin on her body and another with a rare flower found in her hair. Further investigation finds that both women were surprisingly alike in appearance and were both missing small bones in their bodies but had nothing in common in life.

Evil Water is a crime novel written by Inger Wolf following a case lead by Daniel Trokic, a Danish police investigator. He is on the hunt for a serial killer who starts to become careless but continues to stump the team at every turn while his hunt for chestnut haired women continues on.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit, despite the few flaws I picked up on. It has a wonderfully captivating plot and really keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. But, here the few things that led me to mark this book as a three instead of a four:

Each chapter of the book changes the point of view between characters ranging from the victim, the investigators, and the serial killer, which at times made it hard to follow. I would continuously get Jasper and Trokic mixed up, as they seemed to be very similar. The only obvious chapters were the ones in the point of view of the victim and the killer.

The ending of the book seemed almost rushed; it was a great plot twist but could have been better implemented. I guess I loved the idea behind it, but it just didn’t come out quite right. It had just seemed so out of the blue and random.
There were a lot of references to religious practises in Africa that related to the serial killers reasoning behind the murders. I wish that the book went more into depth with this instead of kind of skimming over it.

Despite the few things that really stuck out to me, I think that the book was well written and had a great story behind it. I believe that the book was translated from another language (although I’m not sure which) and there were only a few minor errors to be found. A few repeated words where there shouldn’t have been and maybe a few grammatical mistakes but nothing glaringly obvious or off putting.

I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars.
