Twist is a first novel by Myron Night. The story revolves around a private detective, Adam Twist, who is down on his luck and is asked to do a case he is not happy about. He lives in Wichita, Kansas in 2075. The United States, in fact the whole world, has changed a lot in the last few decades. Global warming has taken its toll on the ice caps and now Wichita is a coastal city. In addition to the major melting of the ice caps, there have been other major weather changes, including increased tornadoes and little to no Ozone layer left.

The weather in Wichita is not the only major change; a Wall has been build to keep the “rift-raft” out of the city. This Wall has caused a major social class difference to be formed. A very powerful man in Wichita, Montrose, sort of the Mayor, has a daughter, Dora, who has gone missing. He believes that she has gone outside the Wall. Montrose sends the Police Chief, Calley, to get Twist and ask him to go outside the Wall to get Dora.

Twist does not want to go outside the Wall, because about 4 years ago, he had a case that did not go very well. He was on the Police Force before that case. But due to mistakes on the case that took place on the other side of the Wall, he left the Force. Ever since that case, Twist has not had the same confidence he had before and does not take any big cases. Since Montrose is such a powerful man, Twist really could not say no.

While outside the Wall, Twist finds out a lot more than he might have liked to know about the city he lives in now. He also meets some of the locals, one of which, Kit, helps him find Dora. Kit helps the best she can, when she is not having seizure like symptoms where she sings songs from “ The Wizard of Oz”.

I would give this book a 3 out of 4. I did not like the ending very well, but otherwise it was an interesting read. This is a good, short book that could be part of ones Summer beach reading stack. There is a under lying theme of “The Wizard of Oz” through out this book, i.e. Kansas, tornadoes, and Kit’s singing. The ending of the book wrapped up all the endings, but I think that it could have been done differently.
