Rescues, Rogues & Renegade by Mary Seifert is book #2 in the Katie and Maverick Cozy Mystery series. It is a tale of a Labrador Retriever with the natural ability to spot danger and rescue those in need. Maverick and his owner Katie find themselves in the most uncanny events from going up against murderers and kidnappers to water rescues and human trafficking, all the while, looking out for one another.

With Maverick’s inherent abilities and the help of Katie and friends, he trains for his Search and Rescue Certification. At the same time, Katie juggles her job as a teacher, leading a science club full of animated teenagers, and figuring out her love life.

Katie and Maverick find themselves in the unique position of solving a string of crimes in their town while determining who they can trust and realizing that nothing is as it seems.

Rescues, Rogues & Renegade was quite an adventure that kept me guessing until the end. I enjoyed the way Seifert painted each scene with almost poetic imagery. Also, the book's second half was a non-stop thriller with one exciting adventure after the other. I believe the author developed the plot well and the ending was nicely wrapped up without being rushed.

I rated this book 4 out of 5 stars. The only things that kept me from rating this book a perfect five stars were the pacing of the book and the number of characters. As earlier stated, the second half of the book was a nonstop thrill ride, however, the first half drug a little and it took me longer than usual to fully engage in the book. Also, at times, I found the number of characters overwhelming and it was difficult to remember who was who.

One other thing that I noted was the cover of the book. In no way did it figure into my rating, but I felt it was lackluster and did not do the phenomenal story any justice.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries and heartwarming stories.

Despite the flaws you pointed out, this thriller seems engaging, though it explores some really dark aspects of humanity such as human trafficking. Thank you for your great review!
