The Horror Within by Marjorie Swift Doering is a book within the C/T/M/H genre. The story took place in a small mining town in Ohio in the year 1919. Emily had been having recurring nightmares of two glowing amber eyes approaching her. It is a nightmare she has been having ever since she saw the beast kill her dog. But no one believed her because she is just a child, and they said it was nothing more than a bear attack. Eryk Laska had just returned home from the war in Europe, and with the beast roaming around, killing people, he couldn’t relax one bit. Not only were he and his family accused of causing one of the murders, but the love of his life was also threatened to be taken away by the most vile person in town. Could Eryk vindicate his family and himself before the beast killed another? Would anyone actually believe Emily that what she saw was not a bear?

What I liked the most about this book was the story. The author did an incredible job of writing a solid horror novel. The thrills, the mysteries, and the twists were all well written and structured into a very enjoyable book. The book also had good pacing. It started slow but steady at the beginning, and when it actually got started, I just couldn’t stop reading. The twist at the very end was also unbelievable. I couldn’t solve anything before I reached the end of the book. That is why I like to applaud the author for writing an incredible book.

What I liked next were the characters. My favorite would be Emily. She was a very mature and sharp little girl. All of her intuitions and insights were correct. It irritated me how the other characters didn’t take her seriously because she was just a little girl. When, in the end, she was proven right, I couldn’t help but smile and be happy for her. My other favorite character was Eryk Laska. I really liked how he kept on fighting for the townspeople even though they treated him like a murderer. Again, it was very satisfying when he was vindicated in the end. The author did an incredible job of writing these characters.

I had nothing to dislike about this book. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I reduced a star because I found quite a few errors and typos. However, it doesn’t affect the enjoyment of reading this book. This book is filled with thrills and mysteries, with a twist in the end that you never saw coming.

I recommend this book to readers who like horror and mystery novels. Readers who enjoy stories about the supernatural would also enjoy this book. This book had no sexual content other than on-page kissing, but had quite a number of profanities. That is why I recommend this book to mature young readers.
