Review of Deceitful Reflection
Deceitful Reflection by Jessica Tepper is a suspenseful and drama-filled novel about love, money, and deception. The story revolves around Brad and Amelia O’Neil, a seemingly perfect couple whose lives are turned upside down when Amelia discovers Brad’s affair with his secretary. Devastated, Amelia flees to her mother’s home in Connecticut. Brad follows her, hoping to save their marriage and protect his assets from being divided in a divorce. As they work on rebuilding their relationship, a surprising revelation comes to light: Amelia has a twin sister who was given up for adoption at birth. This unexpected twist causes a cascade of secrets and deceit, putting Amelia and Brad’s already rocky marriage to the test.
Amelia and Brad’s story had me hooked right from the start. There’s no slow buildup or dull moments; this book was intriguing from beginning to end. Also, the writing is incredibly evocative. At times, I found myself feeling intense rage and desperately craving justice. Tepper did a fantastic job peeling back the story’s layers, gradually revealing more shocking details as it unfolded.
Tepper is skilled at creating vivid imagery, developing tension, and crafting complex characters. Her depiction of Amelia's experience is simultaneously heart-wrenching and inspiring, establishing her as a character you can empathize with and root for.
The multiple perspectives used to tell the story allowed me to fully understand the characters’ thoughts, motivations, and actions, which I found enjoyable.
The story brings attention to the unfair societal expectations placed on women and the sacrifices they are required to make to fulfill traditional roles as good wives and mothers. It also explores the complexities of marriage, the harsh realities of infidelity and divorce, the lengths people are willing to go to for financial gain, and the internal conflicts stemming from one’s upbringing that can have a long-lasting effect on your life.
This story was incredibly unpredictable; the plot twists, elaborate schemes, and character development made for an outstanding story.
The book contains a fair amount of sexual content, profanity, and other sensitive topics, so I do not recommend it to young children and teenagers.
The book has a few grammatical errors, so the author should go through another round of editing to polish it completely. However, these minor issues didn’t take away from my reading experience.
Overall, the book is fantastic, and I give it a perfect score of 5 out of 5 stars for all the reasons I mentioned above. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to individuals who have experienced betrayal in their relationships and understand the manipulation tactics used to minimize the issue, such as lies and gaslighting.
