The Mathematician by Jeff Scott is a fascinating, cozy murder mystery with a sprinkle of gentle romance. The story unfolds in Boston. Frank Griffin, a police detective, is leading the investigation into a series of murders. All murder scenes have one thing in common: complex calculus problems scrawled next to the victims. The clues lead the sleuths to a clandestine group of mathematicians who call themselves “The Order of Pythagoras" and believe in mathematics as a tool for radical change. To assist with the investigation, the Boston police draw on the best mathematical minds in academia and even invite a world-renowned expert on serial killers from England. But will they find the killer?

I enjoyed reading Jeff Scott’s The Mathematician from the first episode to the last. I liked the suspenseful, fast-moving plot and the intricate mystery of the enigmatic mathematical mastermind lurking behind the murders. I enjoyed the gentle warmth of the clean romance and family aspects. Jeff’s relationships with his daughters and fiancée offered a lovely contrast with the heinous crimes Frank was investigating, inspiring Frank to find the monstrous killer so he could enjoy life. I also liked how lightly Jeff pitched the mathematical aspect, making it enjoyable for readers who, like me, dread mathematics. The ending left me wishing for more, and I look forward to reading the other parts of this gripping trilogy.

I enjoyed the plot, the suspense, the well-developed characters, and the ending of this absorbing murder mystery. The only aspect that calls for improvement is the typographical errors. Professional editing would take this novel to the highest plane of excellence. Meanwhile, because of the typographical errors, I deduct a star and rate this riveting read 4 out of 5 stars.

This novel will appeal to crime fiction fans who enjoy fast-moving, cozy murder mysteries. Readers interested in mathematics may also enjoy this novel due to its mathematical riddles.
