Review of Nightwalker
Anyone reading crime news in major US cities has probably heard New York has over 15,000 surveillance cameras. The "good guys" can use this technology for facial recognition searches, giving outsiders the impression that this is a place where repeat offenders have no place. Challenging this narrative, Nightwalker by Louis Bruno is a C/T/M/H book that will make readers wonder who the serial killer in New York is. With few leads to pursue, which seems to indicate that the serial killer is a professional and not a random lunatic, Detective Joe Devlin is tasked with finding answers. This book provides a gripping portrayal of a city under surveillance and raises questions about the effectiveness and ethical implications of such technology in preventing crime.
What stands out most about this book, besides the very well-developed suspenseful atmosphere, is the psychological development of the characters. Unlike similar books, the characters are not automatically divided into "good guys" and "bad guys" in a simplistic analysis of the events. After the reader discovers what happened, I do not doubt that many people will at least question themselves and understand that nothing is always black or white. Human beings are complex, and no one is 100% good or 100% bad. That was what I liked most about this work. The nuanced portrayal of each character adds depth to the narrative, making it more realistic and engaging. This complexity challenges readers to confront their perceptions of morality and justice, compelling them to reflect on the often blurred lines between right and wrong.
As much as I tried, I couldn't find anything negative here. I saw seven minor grammatical errors, but other than that, the book's editing is decent. There are also dozens of profane words, but it's nothing too artificial in the context of the investigations, which include people with a substance use disorder, police officers, and some criminals appearing as secondary characters. The authenticity of the dialogue and scenarios contributes to the immersive experience, making the story more believable and relatable.
Nightwalker has everything you'd expect from a masterpiece of its genre: suspense, psychological depth of the characters, and a well-developed plot. Given the absence of flaws, the book deserves 5 out of 5 stars. Anyone who enjoys suspense and a serial killer story will enjoy this book. The intricate plot twists and well-timed revelations keep readers on the edge of their seats, ensuring the book is hard to put down.
The book is a must-have for those who like suspense and a police investigation story. Books involving serial killers should not be read by those under 18. Still, apart from that, there is no sexual content, and the profane words that appear (although non-borderline profane words appear several times) are expected in a book of this genre. The mature themes and realistic portrayal of crime scenes make it suitable for adult readers who appreciate a well-crafted thriller. The absence of sexual content ensures that the focus remains on the psychological and investigative aspects of the story, making it a compelling read for fans of the genre.
