Review of Waterworks
[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Waterworks" by Jack Winnick.]
If you’re looking for a book that plays like a season of Jack Ryan, then look no further, because Waterworks by Jack Winnick is the book for you. Before getting into the bulk of my review, I’d like to provide my rating, which is 4 out of 5 stars.
Waterworks is the story of agents Uri and Lara of the US government, tasked with a mission to infiltrate Iran, gather information about a potential attack on the San Francisco water supply and misdirect any leads the Iranians may have on the US’ countermeasures plan.
I really enjoyed this book. The author does an amazing job at introducing this action-packed world we are thrust into without it being overwhelming. Characters are wonderfully fleshed out and easy to route for. I thoroughly enjoyed the different perspectives we were given, from our fellow agents, to countless people inside the Iranian regime. I felt like I was right beside Uri and Lara, waiting with bated breath to see what they would do next, and praying they wouldn’t get caught. The story was also very well thought out, so many players are introduced throughout, and the plot twists kept you on the edge of your seat. Even though this book is part of a series, I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything and that’s thanks to the author’s wonderful writing style.
While reading, I definitely felt like I had fallen into one of my favourite thriller/espionage movies, which I adored. I loved the suspense and the high stakes throughout the book. However, I felt like the ending was just a tad lacklustre for me. I think I would have liked a more dramatic ending, after such a dramatic story. While the ending was definitely enjoyable, I felt like it could’ve had a bit more oomph, which is why I rated it the way I did.
Like I said, if you’re looking for your next thriller, look no further than Waterworks. I highly recommend giving it a go.
The book seems to be professionally edited, as I came upon no errors.
