Review of Murder Takes Time
"Murder Takes Time" by Giacomo Giammatteo is a story that talks about the adverse effects of betrayal. Frankie, Tony, and Nicky have been friends since childhood. Their bond was more than friendship—they were like brothers. Life happened, and their friendship took a big hit. Nicky went to jail for killing during a gang shootout. Tony went to work for a mob boss, Tito. Frankie became a detective. When Nicky got released from jail, he joined Tony to work for Tito. Everything was going well until he was assigned to kill Gina. Gina reminded him of his girlfriend before he went to jail, Angela. He spared her and made the mob boss believe the job was done. When Tony hinted to Tito that it was impossible for Nicky to kill a woman, Nicky had to find a way to save himself and Gina. From that moment, the drama began that would lead to Frankie dealing with many murder cases. How did things degenerate to bodies dropping everywhere? Read this book to find out.
There's so much to talk about in this book. However, I will focus on the most important ones. The first thing I like about the book is the beginning. The book starts with a scene where someone is brutally murdered by a man who exhibits the traits of a tactical hitman. This opening scene sets the tone for the non-stop drama (for the most part) that is enjoyable. With an opening scene like that, readers will have no doubt that they are in for an exciting ride.
The next thing I liked was how the author handled the backstories, which gave me an idea of the characters' motivations for their actions. The trips to the past and back to the present were organized; I did not feel disconnected from the story at any point. The author was so detailed that I knew the period in which a narrative was happening. Every chapter began with the period and place in which it happened with reference to the present day. For instance, Chapter 12 began with "Wilmington—19 Years Ago," Chapter 30 began with "Brooklyn—3 Years Ago," and Chapter 56 began with "Current Day." With these details, I could draw connections between what happened in the past and what was happening in the present.
I like how the author develops the friendship between Frankie, Tony, and Nicky. Their friendship is realistic and relatable. I have two friends that I have a similar bond with. Our friendship began in secondary school. However, life has happened to us such that I am in the same city with one, and the other guy is in another city. Although we rarely keep in touch, our reunions are always memorable. Many readers will connect to their friendship, especially their reunion after many years.
The description technique used in the book was good. I had to figure out some details along the way, which kept me engaged. The suspense was awesome. It was not until the book's final third that the pieces began to fall in place. The ending was unexpected, but I loved it. You'd need to read the book to see it for yourself.
There was absolutely nothing I disliked about the book. I didn't see any aspect of the book the author would need to improve on. The editors did an excellent job of making the book error-free. I rate it a perfect 5 out of 5. If you enjoy murder mystery stories, I recommend this book to you.
