Beyond Boundaries by George Carter is a psychological “thriller” filled with many unexpected twists. The "secrets" discovered throughout the text are unpredictable and keep the reader highly engaged. I found myself not wanting to stop reading because of the intrigue and suspense, which made it a quick and easy read.
This book begins with Milo, a small boy, escaping from his abusive family dynamic through the protection of his imaginary friend, Henry. The tragic situation Milo finds himself in is what sets the story in motion. It involves many “complicated” relationships that reveal themselves slowly throughout the progression of the novel. There are issues of control, violence, danger, and criminal elements that are scary. However, there are also hopeful topics of forgiveness, empathy, and love. Examples of helping others, having an open mind and heart, and second chances add to the appeal.
Because the story is full of human connections, it makes it more believable. However, at times, the drama in the story reminded me of an episode of Law and Order because of the way some situations were so quickly and cleanly explained or resolved. I can forgive this, though, because of the true essence of the story itself. It shows how love can endure and will fight for what feels impossible when it comes to “family.” As we all know, being related and being “family” can mean two very different things.
I recommend this book because it is a short, exciting read that I think even young adults (aged 16 and up) would enjoy. However, I cannot give it the highest rating due to the numerous editing errors. Even though the author is English and therefore uses some rules, words, and spellings that are not necessarily “American,” I found enough justifiable errors while reading to make it a distraction. Therefore, I must rate this book as a 4 out of 5.

The book seems to comprise many themes, but one of the most outstanding seems to be the lesson on forgiveness. I look forward to reading this book and learning about the complexities surrounding family in the book. Thanks for the review, @Nancy Ferris Postilli.

I can see why the unexpected twists and slow reveal of "complicated" relationships, alongside themes of forgiveness and love, kept you engaged. It sounds like a truly compelling story about the enduring power of family, even with the editing issues you noted. Thanks for sharing your insightful take!

I normally like a thriller genre story, but I when I see a well written thriller I instantly love them. This really looks like it's going to be an awesome read. I will be trying this out, thanks for the review.
