Jack Valentine is a man of many faces. Orphaned at a young age, he’d lived off the streets, pickpocketing wealthy people’s purses and wallets. That is, until the police caught up with him and shipped him off to a Roman Catholic Orphanage. Within a few years, a wealthy man named Lord Bedlam adopted him, taught him manners, educated him, and gave him the code of ethics Jack lives by now. Then, the unexpected happened. The man he’d grown to love and respect was mugged and murdered by a gang called Old Bill.

Now years later, he’s taken being a bad-ass to a new level. He fights for justice for those who don’t get any all while doing whatever is necessary to bring down the gang that killed his adopted father. Whether that’s torture, kidnap, kill, drive recklessly, or put himself and those close to him in danger, those are all small prices to pay. So consumed with his revenge, he doesn’t have much time for love or friends until he meets Samantha, but there’s another girl that likes him as well. A bank teller named Susan whom he saved during a bank robbery. Will he find the justice he seeks before it winds him up dead? Will he find room for love? Could Susan or Samantha be just what he needs to take heal or will they only distract him from his mission?

The plot of this book was intense, well-developed, and engaging. Filled with action, plot twists, and mystery, it was hard to put down. The author’s vivid description and writing style was unique and drew the reader easily into Jack’s world. Although, the torture and violence might make a few readers queasy, it was well worth the time and added a lot of dimension to the anti-hero/hero of Jack Valentine. The transitions between scenes and chapters were smooth and were easy to follow, even with the fast-paced nature of the book. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but befitting of the main character.

While the focus is more on the plot than the characters, readers can’t help but sympathize with Jack and fall in love with his personality. The characters by the end were fairly well-developed, but it would have been nice to see a little more character growth.

Overall, I give it 4 out of 4 stars. The story was intense and perfect for the readers who are looking for books that will keep them on the edge of their seats. Recommended for fans of Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child, Bourne series by Robert Ludlum, and other action, suspense, and mystery novels.
