Ratlines by Stuart Neville

Post by Gobberz1990 »

As this is my first review, please bare with me.

I started reading this Saturday and I, finished Monday afternoon. Firstly, I find that if a book has short chapters as this does, I tend to read it far quicker than a book that has chapters that are say, 40 pages. Anyway. Ratlines is a book set in early 1960's Ireland and essentially involves a fictional man named Albert Ryan trying to solve a murder case and how it involves the Nazi fraud 'Otto Skorzeny'. The book itself is well written so, I believe the twists are well plotted and you can't loose your spot.

Albert as it happens, left Ireland to fight for Britain which as you can imagine, does not go down well with many in Ireland. This also translates into Skorzeny and indeed the corrupt Irish minister in charge of Ryan, trying to control the course of Ryan's investigation even, as far as Skorzeny using a honey trap to get information from Ryan - which, backfirers.

Naturally, you root for Albert Ryan and, the love that does blossom between him and the 'honey trap' Celia Hume. It is their burgeoning love that helps Ryan realise that, he simply cannot let Skorzeny get away with murder, and, he cannot let Skoorzeny or the minister control him or the investigation.

Overall, I did enjoy the book. It was well written, had some real life people in the book but I believe that, the fictional characters were well written. I had this book on my shelf for a few months admittedly, due to the fact I have so many books on my Kindle and, I wanted to read other books I had. I am glad I read it though as, I believe it to be a well written, well researched book that I think other readers, may enjoy.

Also, I must also point out that, 'Ratlines' are simply the ways in which, Nazi's were able to escape Europe to friendly countries like Argentina and, Ireland.
