The story takes place in Germany. Frank Brenner is a technical trainer who lives with his wife, Melanie, and their two children. They seem to have a happy marriage and family life. The story starts with him having breakfast with his family. It is a normal morning and he is in a hurry for his lecture but when he steps on the road a terrible accident happens. He is run over by a car.
Anna Liebermann has a hard time to wake up after a party with a lot of drinking. She is also late for work but her car won't start. For her good luck (or bad) Ben is passing by and offers to help her start the engine. The engine starts, Ben asks her out and she is on her road to work. In her anguish not to lose Ben’s telephone, she loses control of the car and crushes hitting a man.
Three car accidents happened that day, one was fatal. Someone from the Senate Chancellery in Berlin, named Rentsch, wanted the victim of one of the car accidents dead. So Sirkowsky, his hitman goes to the hospital to assure that he is dead. Melanie was informed by the police for husband’s accident and is heading to the hospital. Ben’s telephone was found at the accident and is informed by the police that Anna had an accident and he also goes to the hospital to see what happened.
I will let the reader find out what happens next and how these three different stories match and give a wonderful and full of suspense mystery/crime/horror book. The only thing I want to add is that Frank and Anna fall in coma. Frank is recovering fast but he sees awful nightmares. Someone is trying to warn him that his family is in danger. But what can he do to save his family in his condition?
The book is very well written. I didn't notice any mistakes or typos. It is divided in small chapters, which make it very easily read. The author succeeds in keeping the reader's interest throughout the book, although the book’s pace is rather slow. The story doesn't progress quickly, but you don't get bored because there is a mystery throughout the book, or better to say mysteries. And when you think the mystery is solved something happens and everything is reversed.
I can't find something I didn't like, but the end. I don't mean that is bad, but the whole book builds high expectations for the ending, which are not met by the ending of the book. I don't mean that the end spoils the whole book, but I felt a little bit disappointed.
For the reasons explained above, I give to the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The only reason could make me give 3 stars is the ending, but I don't believe the end spoils the whole book.
