There is only one way for me to describe My Journey to Hell by John D. Ottini…Wow. At first I thought this was going to be one of those books that wouldn’t hold my interest for more than a few minutes, but the more I read the more interested I became. I couldn’t put the book down and had to know what was going to happen next.

My Journey to Hell is about a man, Joel Simon, who has been a bit down on his luck and how in the span of a weekend his life literally became a living hell. Joel’s ex-wife and mother are kidnapped, he is getting strange phone calls, blacking out for periods of time, and the cops are literally at the front door. Add all that together and any normal person would think this weekend was the “road to hell”. This book is interesting because the entire time I thought I had a clear view of what was going on and I knew how everything was going to end; however, I was completely wrong and the ending of the book was an absolute shocker.

My favorite part of this book is that it had that element of misdirection. While reading I formed an opinion of Joel Simon and it wasn’t a very positive one. I thought he was a woman hater who was constantly drunk and that he deserved what was coming. That being said, at the end of the book when you are finally clued in to what was actually going on you are completely floored with the new knowledge and never would have expected things to end the way that they did.

I can honestly say that there was not anything that I really disliked about this book. As I said before I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy reading this book in the beginning, but I was mistaken and have no complaints whatsoever.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Mr. Ottini’s ability to tell Joel’s story over the span of a long weekend was amazing to me. Usually in a story like that I would expect details to be missing, but as I read I realized that everything important was there and the story was able to catch your attention from start to finish. I enjoyed this book and would gladly read other works by Mr. Ottini.

Wow, thanks for the wonderful review. My intention was to write a compact story with many twists and misdirections and then pack a surprise punch at the end. Based on your review, it seems like I may have pulled it off. So glad you enjoyed the book, hope others will feel the same if they read it.
