The Langoliers by Stephen King

Post by BGChargers123 »

The first novella in his coveted collection FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT, Stephen King's THE LANGOLIERS is a work that both King fans and fiction lover alike will enjoy.

After narrowly averting a gas leak and discovering the death of is ex-wife, pilot Brian Engle boards the Boeing 767 to Boston with a little weight on his mind, to say the least. Tired and overwhelmed, Engle quickly dozes off before takeoff, awakening only to find more than 3/4's of the ship missing, including the crew and pilot. Manning the controls, Engle is able to transport him and his 9 companions to a small airport in Maine, only to discover an uninhabited world void of sound or feeling.

What King has excelled at throughout his career is the effective utilization of themes such childhood and growing pains, and THE LANGOLIERS is no exception. When describing unruly passenger Craig Toomy's childhood experiences, the reader has no choice but to immerse themselves in the story itself. Another strong point of this work is the extensive details regarding planes and flying. King really did his research in this one, and this only adds to the validity and quality of the piece.

King has stated that he penned THE LANGOLIERS in a months time, never really putting the keyboard down, and it is easy to see why King himself got caught up so much in his story. While short in length, THE LANGOLIERS certainly makes up for in depth and value. I definitely recommend this book, and I feel that everybody can take something away from it in one way or another.
