"A Million Little Pieces" James Frey

Post by mere81 »

"A Million Little Pieces" is definitely a page turner. The author James Frey takes the reader through the ups and downs of an addict/alcoholic in a treatment facility. There is debate on how true his story is. Mr Frey does admit to changing names of people and places to protect thier anonymity and exaggerating some events to help hold the interest of the reader.

James's story begins with him waking up on an airplane with no recollection of how he got there. Upon landing he is wheeled off the plane in a wheelchair because he is to sore and weak to walk. He is met by his parents and taking to a treatment facility to be treated for drug and alcohol addiction.

Mr Frey spends his first few days in detox where he describes in detail the pain and agony he endures as he goes through withdrawal. As a fellow recovering addict the pain he described brought back clear memories of my own suffering.

After leaving detox James is moved into residential treatment. From years of drug abuse and fighting his teeth are severly damaged. He needs to have several root canals and a few pulled. James describes these events in horrific detail as he wasn't allowed any anesthesia.

During his stay we are introduced to and given a glimpse into the lives of a few other patients at the center. One of them being Lilly, a young fair skinned Crack addict whom he falls in love with.

Overall this book is an excellent read and a real page turner. I would recommend this book to anyone who is an addict/alcoholic or has been affected by someone who is.
