Looking for a page-turner with an author that has a great sense of humor? Like twists and turns and unexpected moments that get your heart racing and your mind stretching? Look 👀 no further, "The Hotel Detective and his Lover" by Derek Picot will fit the bill for you.
The excellent review by an OLBC reviewer lets us know that the author has experience running exclusive hotels and a great sense of humor. Therefore, he writes well about the inner workings of a hotel and has practically made the hotel into another character to care about in this book. Enjoy!
If you're going through hell, keep going.

Although thrillers (especially with plots that twist and turn) are not usually my cup of tea, this well-written review made me want to check out the book. Based on the review, I was hoping for a fast paced adventure with lots of atmospheric detail.

Unfortunately, this review is much better written than the portion of the novel I sampled. The book starts with a run-on screed that could be edited into four separate complete sentences, and goes downhill from there. The author apparently never uses a single adjective where 3, 4, or even 5 can be crammed in. Analogies (e.g. she got on the motorcycle saddle "as if she was sliding on top of him in bed") are clumsy and ultimately unevocative. Descriptions are both heavy handed and trite, with a penchant for the salacious ("he had the hungry appetite of a young virile man not fulfilled," while the fish he had for lunch was "as firm as youthful breasts").

The review piqued my interest, unfortunately the author's extreme wordiness and lack of self editing meant I could not bring myself to finish the Amazon sample, let alone read the entire novel. Based on this review, it appears there may be a good plot and interesting characters hiding in the verbiage. This is a self-published novel, so possibly the issue is simply a lack of professional editing. Perhaps this reviewer can give the author a hand?

The Adelphi Hotel seems to have its fair share of drama and suspense and has witnessed a lot. Hopefully it'll also survive the takeover bid. I love thrillers, so I'll check this book out.

Cristina, this is a great review! I fully agree with you that it is riveting - I was struggling to stop myself sampling it! I like that your review does not include spoilers, so I can enjoy the fun of connecting the motorcycling accident which opens the novel with the Adelphi Hotel's hostile takeover bid.

“The Hotel Detective and His Lover” by Derek Picot is a wonderful cat-and-mouse game thriller with many twists and a very surprising ending. Richard Marker, Chief Security Officer at the Adelphi Hotel in London is infatuated with Sandrine, the French Public Relations Officer. Unfortunately for him, Sandrine is involved in an affair with one of the managers named George Brooks. He hopes that things change and he can get a chance to win her heart. When a hostile takeover bid for the hotel begins George will have the opportunity to work with Sandrine and hopefully begin a relationship. While this book is 500 pages, it is a fast moving and easy to read story. Picot has many years of experience in the hotel business so he knows what he is talking about when he describes the activities that occur at the Adelphi Hotel. Each of the 16 chapters covers different cinematic scenes so each major character gets time in the limelight. I look forward to reading this book. Very good review.

I like the drama and the dry humour at this hotel. It reminds me of the hilarious series of Fawlty Towers featuring John Cleese. Thanks for the review.

"Your thorough review of Derek Picot's 'The Hotel Detective and his Lover' provides a comprehensive understanding of the book's strengths and areas that might benefit from improvement. Your appreciation for the gripping thriller, with its numerous twists and turns, and the praise for the author's ability to maintain suspense and unpredictability throughout the narrative, offer valuable insights for potential readers. The detailed descriptions of the characters and the Adelphi Hotel, as well as the author's dry sense of humor, add depth and richness to your analysis. Your critical observation of the need for another round of proofreading and editing, while acknowledging that the errors are not overly distracting, contributes to a well-balanced review. Given the occasional profane words, hot scenes, and graphic violence, your recommendation for mature audiences aligns with providing potential readers with appropriate expectations. Overall, your thoughtful review presents a fair evaluation of the book's merits and areas for enhancement. 📚🕵️‍♂️

I love how you highlight the vivid atmosphere created around the hotel setting. Clearly the author used his hospitality expertise to great effect in making the establishment feel like a living, breathing entity.
