“Shooting Bogies” by Ralph Monti is a story about a man named Rocky Delmonico, a very overweight big-money golf hustler that gets in trouble at a funeral for a mafioso in his neighborhood. He made a terrible mistake by disrespecting a tradition that traveled from Italy to the U.S. with the mafia that involved Gino’s mother diving into the open grave of her dead husband. Rocky burst into laughter while others looked in horror at him because they knew this was totally unacceptable behavior and very disrespectful of the grieving mob family. His friend Pipe told him he needed to go see Gino and make amends for disrespecting his mother, Anna, who was well known as a crazy pit bull of a woman that was five feet tall but would take on anyone. He did not want to go because he needed to take his mom to the doctor but Pipe told him he had to go see Gino. This is a crime thriller that involves the mafia and their families. Monti used action, dark humor and suspense throughout the story and it keeps the reader totally involved. Character development is excellent and each character is detailed to the point where readers can actually visualize the person. Rocky is the main character and he knows that there will be serious consequences if he does not follow the mafioso rules. Having grown up in a neighborhood in Chicago only a few miles from a very prominent mafia town, the sample was so good that I want to read the entire well-written and carefully edited book.

Some traditions are best not messed with. If you do you have to face the consequences, as the protagonist of this story will soon learn. And a mob family is involved? That's a full-blown crime thriller.

I really enjoyed reading your review of Shooting Bogies! Your description of the mix between golf and humor intrigued me, especially the way you highlighted how the book uses relatable anecdotes to appeal to both golfers and non-golfers. It’s great to hear that the author successfully incorporates lighthearted stories to keep the narrative engaging while still focusing on the challenges of the sport. Your mention of the detailed character development makes me curious about how the protagonists navigate the golf course—and life! Thank you for such an insightful review; it’s convinced me to give this book a shot!

Rocky Delmonico needs to make amends for disrespecting a tradition. I like the outline of the story. I read the sample and found profanity in the first page. It is a big turn off for me, so I'll skip this one. Thanks for the review. Congrats on the BOTD!

Book Review for "Shooting Boogie" Rating: 4/5."Shooting Bogies" is an interesting and funny look at the ups and downs of amateur golf. The book depicts the challenges and joys that come with attempting to master the game while accepting its flaws. The author's amusing anecdotes and genuine experiences make it a fun read for both experienced and casual golfers. The tale succeeds in its cheerful tone, providing both comedic relief and genuine encouragement to anyone who has ever picked up a golf club. However, the humor can occasionally mask more practical ideas that could help readers improve their game. Furthermore, while the book flows smoothly overall, some parts feel slightly repetitious. Despite its small weaknesses, "Shooting Bogies" is a fun and relatable read. It’s not a technical guide but a celebration of perseverance, making it perfect for anyone who loves the sport’s quirks.
