"A Wildflower in the Dark" by Michael E. Kozak is a gripping speculative fiction novel that blends dystopian and supernatural elements. Set in the year 2192, the story follows Gretan Hutchen, a 32-year-old man who has faced numerous hardships, including being orphaned and battling health issues. Despite these challenges, Gretan discovers he has a unique ability to communicate with the Sleepless dead, an inherited trait revealed to him by his grandmother.

As Gretan learns to harness this ability, he encounters a young Sleepless woman who captivates him. Through their interactions, he uncovers a sinister plot by a group known as the Ancients, who aim to recruit the Sleepless dead into their ranks, further destabilizing an already fractured world. Determined to protect the Sleepless woman and uphold what is right, Gretan embarks on a perilous journey filled with unexpected twists and profound discoveries.

Kozak excels in creating a tense and atmospheric narrative, intertwining existential questions about life and death with a society in turmoil. The character development is particularly strong; Gretan's resilience and quest for meaning make him a relatable protagonist. The novel's emotional depth adds a layer of realism to the supernatural drama, making it both engaging and thought-provoking.

However, some readers might find the pacing uneven, especially in the middle sections where the exposition can feel prolonged. Despite this, the novel successfully merges different genres, offering a story that entertains while inviting reflection on deeper themes.

In conclusion, "A Wildflower in the Dark" is a compelling read that combines elements of dystopian and supernatural fiction. While it has moments of slow pacing, the rich character development and intriguing plot make it a worthwhile read for fans of speculative fiction. 5 out of 5.

I am also a great fan and ardent reader of poetry, and I am happy that apart from the seamless transition, the poems communicate a lot as well. Gretan Hutchen seems to have passed through a lot of seemingly insurmountable hurdles, and when it appears they are over, he gets thrown into the middle of a storm regarding his supernatural abilities. I look forward to reading this book.
Many thanks for this captivating, informative review, @Merits Anih.

I usually dismiss dystopian novels because I find they make me anxious, but I like the scary part of this one! And I wonder if the protagonist's neurodivergence plays a role in his gift. Thank you for your review!

To go through so much starting from birth is very unfortunate. The setting around this story is very admirable. I want to see what he accomplishes in his adult life and to if he ever figured out what he was meant to protect. Absolutely love the anticipation.

What caught my attention is the book's title A Wildflower in the Dark and the book cover. These are selling points to a novel and they usually pull the readers in or drive them away. I'd say this is an added plus to the awesome content of the book.

A fantastic mystery story can be found in the book "A wildflower in the Dark" by Michael E Kozak. The story is set in beyond the year 2160 and follows Gretan Hutchen, who is a survivor of the War of the Century.

This book presents a suspenseful story with excellent character development. The plot looks engaging as well as the fact that the author includes his own dreams and weaves them into the story. It is intriguing to know how Gret will deal with the loss of his adoptive family and the fact that he can see the dead. Sounds interesting!
