Although I like the fact that the book touches on the theme of racial discrimination, I'm put off by the graphic descriptions during Kim's night out with her brother Hermando. I'm also wondering about her role in the overall plot. Thanks for a great review!

Mixed Blessings seems like a perfect title for this interesting read which focusses on racial differences, identity crisis, minority groups etc. I look forward to having this book on my bookshelf.

This sounds like a good book that seems very much relevant to present-day scenario. The discord between different religions, beliefs, and races are ever present for us to witness. Thank you for an insightful review.

Race and friction among the different races is an incredibly sensitive subject around the world and especially in America, and that's why we need to explore them through all avenues, including fiction. This story sounds fascinating. While I'm afraid it might be too tense for me, I'll keep it on my "to read" list so that I can get to it when I have some free time. Thank you for the helpful review.

This book definitely touches one of the most important topics in history and in today's society - racism. It will be interesting to follow the main characters' experiences.

I've always known that a lot of religions today are terrible contributing factors to racial discrimination, and this book puts a fresh spin on the age-old issue, especially that of America. I'm curious about the "new race" and what comes out of it. Thanks for the review.

A new dimension in understanding racism is showcased in the book "Mixed Blessings" by J.M. Muse, which focuses on Kimberly, a mixed-race child, who faces identity crisis and being bullied by her schoolmates. A leader Kublai Khan With the help of leaders of minority groups, challenges the status quo by introducing a new kind of race. The book appears to be an eye opener.

"Mixed Blessings" is a contemporary fiction novel by Jo Muse about a very novel concept of being able to determine your own race on the census. Congratulations on BOTD!!

The premise of this book sounds great. But, I don't think I'd be interested in this book as it focus on both racism as well as its religious aspect. I'm not a fan of religious and spiritual books. So, I won't be reading it. But, thanks for your review.

It sounds like an informative novel which deals with the situation of racism in the society; mainly focused towards the American society. Thank you for the review!

:eusa-think: So I read the sample first before coming to the review. I was interested in Kimberly and her story, and lost interest with the next character (think his name was Khan.) Though after reading this review, I see that the book doesn't follow Kimberly anymore past the first day/night in Mexico. Also after reading replies to the review, it talks about the book also being about or talking about religion also along with racism. I'm not a fan of books about religion. That is a turn off for me. I didn't get much help about the book from the review honestly though, but from everyone's comments on the review. :| :( The review wasn't of much help to me other then telling about Kimberly's part in the book didn't continue for her whole week stay in Mexico with her Dad & his family or after when she returns home. I would have liked to read her story more, being biracial of Mexican father & Jewish American mother. I wasn't much interested in Khan's story. I'm not interested in the religion part of the book. And i didn't get to read about the news reporter Cynthia (believe that's what the reviewer said the character was/named) in the sample to meet her and didn't get an idea of who she was from the reviewer. The reviewer/review didn't help me at all, like I said. I rated the review 1.5 out of 4 stars, and that's being generous.

This is the kind of book that is needed to constantly remind us of the need to sever the cords of racism. A great book to read. Very insightful review.

I'm glad you enjoyed the book. Although the concept of the new race sounds promising, this is a book I wouldn't read, as I am on the lookout for books where positive reinforcement of the different races prevails as opposed to focus on the different forms and faces of racism.

The author uses interracial characters to dissect the race conversation in America. The role of religious institutions in propagating racial wars is also intriguing, and anyone who wants to read about this topic will find solace in this book.
