- Latest Review: The Warramunga's War by Greg Kater
I generally enjoy historical fiction books and especially historical fiction books set in World War II, but this book did not do it for me.
People have mentioned that the pace was fast and it was that, too fast. It felt like the author was trying to incorporate every possible major event from 1929-1942/3 all in the same book. I did not feel like I ever connected with any of the characters as there was scant information given about them and what information you did get, came in little bites. The characters were just sort of static and didn't seem to have any depth to them. I found most of the conversations juvenile and uninteresting.
As to the historical fiction part of the story, I found several elements just not believable. I realize an author does use some license when writing historical fiction as you cannot know every single thing that happened to certain people, but the idea that Al Capone gave the order to "Kill Abby White! Now!"?? No. The idea that Hitler proposed to Abby White?? No. It was as if this Abby White were the heroine of heroines and lived and did everything there was to do in World War II and met every important person in World War II that a person could meet all in one book. I think it would have worked better if some of the events had been explored a bit more and that were done through a series of books.
There were also a number of typos including two spellings of Goebbels (Goebbels and Goebbles). Also, it seemed to need more editing. Such as, there were things that the characters said that either didn't really make sense with something they had said previously or they just simply contradicted themselves in the very next sentence.
Having said all that, I did appreciate the free copy and the fact that the stories of each person resolved themselves in the end and you weren't left wondering what happened to certain characters.
