The book seems to be very deep in its subject matter but also thrilling at the same time. I like how the reviewer had been able to give a balanced perspective on such a book as it appears to contain extreme content, showing the overall positive side and giving a just rating.

It's always amazing when a young child (like Vander) stands up to face life head on like adults. But yet, he seems to be facing a lot in his life for someone of that age. I believe themes like racism, corruption, poverty would only serve to make this book grounded and relatable.
Congratulations on BOTD!

One of the best reviews here, congrats! However, after reading both the sample and the review, I have realised it is too dark for me. I just couldn't read graphic descriptions of violent acts and of death.

I like that the chapters are concise because it makes the book easy to read. While it may seem exaggerated to some that nine-year-old Vander Masozi is exposed to scenes of death and abuse, I believe it increases the realism of the story.

"I recommend this book to rational minds, not only for the thrill it provides but also for the many disturbing truths about our reality that it brings to the fore."
You almost got me with your review. I guess I choose to be irrational because I am not a thriller reader. Great job with the review.

In my opinion, this book is a thrilling piece that is filled horror and tragedy. Vander is a unique character who doesn't know much, but he still strives to be safe. I like the character development of the book. Good plot and storyline. Thanks for your review.

Vander, a nine-year-old boy, comes from an abusive family, but has an extraordinary skill that will help him survive and learn more about himself and humanity. The novel touches many grave themes such as death, murder, abuse, racial discrimination, and violence. Thanks for your review!

"Making Monsters" by AJ Parnell & Chuck Duncan. A very interesting book, talks about Vander who lives with his lazy, abusive, alcoholic father and having a mentally defeated mother in Cape Town. Vander mostly struggles to provide food for his family and having to protect his mother from his father's brutality. Congrats on BOTD.
