Cara, just reading the first paragraph of your review gave me a whiplash and I loved it! I can tell from your review that this book is an absolute rollercoaster. The characters seem very well-developed and the book seems well-structured. The Twilight series was a teenage obsession of mine. If you hadn't already convinced me to read this book with that gripping first paragraph and phrases like "overarching aversion towards fellow human beings," and "a youthful deficiency in intestinal fortitude," the word "vampires" would have definitely done the trick. I appreciate that you have so thoroughly detailed the book's flaws. Slow pacing and an uncertain climax are two of my pet peeves when it comes to reading. However, the plot and characters still sound amazing, so I'm definitely going to give this book a try.
Thank you for the wonderful review.

The contrast between a burned-out detective and a possibly supernatural child is fascinating. I’m really intrigued by the quiet menace surrounding Steve definitely giving off ‘creepy coastal town with secrets’ energy. thanks for the great review.
