Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a nonfiction story that explores several current and relevant topics that can be somewhat controversial. It delves into the world of politics and science, gun control and racism and the NRA’s stance on the matters. The book lends a different twist to the subject of gun control and the advancement of medicine by introducing the invention of a watch that can predict when someone is going to die. Given this information, what would you do? The book explores the different scenarios that can unfold once someone has that knowledge. The characters decide whether to use that information to get their life in order, or do something good, while others may want to pursue revenge for an injustice.
The character development and plot grab and hold your attention from the beginning. The book starts with an older couple, the Fuller’s, and their realization that they have been living in their own bubble and haven’t really stayed up to date on the changes in the world around them. They are friends with 2 minority couples, the Kahn’s and the Martinez’s and at dinner one evening, they hear about the experiences of racism and bigotry that they have faced. The topic of senior’s buying more guns to defend and protect themselves comes up, and the Fuller’s begin to wonder if they should purchase a gun.
Meanwhile on the other side of the country, Dr. Vijay Patel of Vitaltech Industries, is developing and testing a new watch that can monitor your vital stats and even predict when you are going to die. While the technology is revolutionary, Vijay is faced with the dilemma of including that information in the release of the watch. Ultimately, his team decides to release the watches, with the ability to predict death, to a small group of senior citizens.
The story develops when news breaks of more and more senior citizens shooting and killing people around them. The FBI begins to link the shootings with the seniors that have received their final notice and have also recently purchased a gun through the new senior discount offered by the NRA. Special Agent Zoe Brouet meets with Vijay and discusses her investigation into the watch and its potential motive for these killings. Vitaltech is forthright and helpful in the investigation and it is decided that there is nothing they can do to stop them from including the final notice as part of their watches technology. It is the same as if a doctor told a patient they had 6 months to live.
The story continues with Vince and Trudi furthering their education on guns and developing a friendship with another minority couple that has also been threatened and treated unfairly because of their race. The journey everyone is on in the book is very captivating and it is hard to put down, as you want to see what happens to each and every person.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was written and edited professionally and is thought provoking and riveting. Anyone who reads this book will find something to ponder and discuss with friends. It does touch on the subject of school shootings, so if you have a sensitivity to that topic, you may not want to read it. What I liked most about this book is the character development and struggles they all face. There wasn't anything I disliked about the book. I think it was written unbiasedly regarding gun control and the politics around it, it allowed you to form your own opinion on whether people should or shouldn’t own a gun. I also find the technology of the watch to be fascinating and wonder how many people would actually want to know when they were going to die.
