The T-Zone is an investigative crime novel by Bill Hansmann.
A former U.S. Marine sniper is accused of killing a baseball star, Miguel Fernandez, during the opening night of the 2019 baseball season. The sniper's best friend contacts the Atkinson Detective Agency in a desperate attempt to have his innocence proven. The detective agency finds that they might have bitten off more than they can chew with this case. They learn that Fernandez defected from Cuba six years earlier. He also owed a notorious loanshark a hefty sum of money. Is the sniper, the Mob, or the Cuban government behind this gruesome murder?
The T-Zone is centred around an intriguing plot where the detective agency's progress with solving the Fernandez case is impeded by the involvement of a corrupt FBI official, Paul Randolph. The FBI's involvement created explosive tension and conflict which kept me glued to the pages of The T-Zone. For example, Randolf sees the case as an opportunity for self-advancement and promotion. He seeks to close the case as quickly as possible and to take the credit for solving the Fernandez murder. His selfish ambition is so great that he does not mind pinning the crime on an innocent party. His only concern is that the public buys whatever theory he can whip up and showers him with glory. Good agents within the FBI are confronted with a battle to stop the corruption within their beloved agency.
The book traces Fernandez's life in Cuba and details that led to his defection. Through this, we get a feel for the impact that human rights violations have on the average person. It was really frustrating to read about the infringement on freedom of movement, freedom of expression, etc... I felt this added a depth to the book.
The T-Zone was really easy to read. The plot moved at a steady pace and had enough suspense to keep my attention. I also liked how the chapters were kept short and sweet. There were no elements that caused the book to stretch or drag on pointlessly. The only downside is that it does contain some violent scenes. So if you are fainthearted I advice you to skip this book.
Investigative crime novel fans will enjoy this book. The method in which the crime was solved is well detailed. Also, the book is realistic enough to be believable; I personally feel this is important for any crime novel to be a success. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is so well edited that I could barely find fault with it.
