What would you do if you knew with certainty that you would die in the next 10 days? Would your actions reflect your life as you had always lived it? Or would you use the opportunity to do the one thing you have always wanted to do - whether that is good or bad, generous or selfish? Would you look inward or outward?

Final Notice by Van Fleisher looks not only at the patients who participate in the VT2 study, but also the developers, the doctors, law enforcement, and other minor characters. You would think a reader might find this distracting, but I thought it gave the story a sense of well-roundedness. And the characters were all so different. Yes, they varied in development, by Fleisher really managed to develop the characters to such a degree that you felt some engagement with and empathy for them.

Final Notice was very thought provoking. We are all aware of the rights for which the citizens of this country has fought. These rights were hard won, and these liberties not to be taken lightly. But we also bear the burden of ensuring accountability that our rights are being observed safely and responsibly. Do we do this? This book really makes you think of how many ways even well-intentioned efforts can go awry. Make no mistake; these are everyday struggles we face. While Final Notice is a work of fiction, the issues Fleisher highlights could not be closer to our very own reality.

One thing is clear: in the end, we must stand together in our humanity against the encroaching tide of fear and entitlement. This solidarity is the only thing that will get us through these horrifyingly difficult times.

I rate this book 4 out of 4. It was an easy read but still interesting and provoking. And no typos!
