This is a review of Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison. Twins Ron and Bing are in history class discussing the importance of the SAT test that's going to be tomorrow. They're trying to write a song for their band and go to study/practice at Prathamesh a.k.a. Meat's parents' summer cabin. As they're waiting for Kaitlyn to show up, a freak storm blows in followed by their history teacher showing up. He's seemingly possessed and is trying to attack them. In the middle of the commotion and confusion, a dagger is found. This dagger is able to psychically possess people and attaches to Meat.
The events that follow the dagger controlling Meat lead to all four of them finding out about a sacrifice ceremony at the Golfers' Association Clubhouse. Meat and Kaitlyn have been kidnapped to be sacrificed, and Ron and Bing go to rescue them. Mr. Brom, the history teacher, helps them get inside the clubhouse and eventually disappears. Ron and Bing disguise themselves as caddies and search for the place of the sacrifice while Kaitlyn and Meat work with the dagger to escape. This book is full of psychic possessions, fighting monsters and various surprise twists that lead up to the ceremony.
Starting off, I was thinking of rating this book 3 stars since I was entertained enough to continue reading. As I got closer and closer to the ending, I decided that this book really deserved 4 out of 4 stars. I was constantly amused and entertained, and was curious about the outcome of the sacrifice ceremony. I was amused by the dagger's dialogue and was on the edge of my seat when Ron and Bing were fighting off the teethheads. As for the editing, I only noticed 4 errors. It seeming to be well edited and my heightened interest to finish this book is why I'm giving it a top rating.
While reading this book, I was thinking the same thing that Ron and Bing kept mentioning. They had to take the SAT test the next morning and were so busy with the saving Kaitlyn and Meat from being sacrificed situation that they got no studying done whatsoever. Moments where death seemed inevitable had them contemplating their lives so far and what plans they had for the future. There was an explanation behind Meat's nickname, Ron and Bing's relationship as identical twins, Kaitlyn and her showers, and everyone developing telekinetic abilities.
This book would be of interest to anyone who enjoys reading about the paranormal and secret societies. For anyone who's a fan of the spy/secret agent theme, this book can be considered a bit up that alley. There's training, fighting and secret missions. Of course, the training part is only mentioned as opposed to there being a training session in the book. People who have an interest in telekinesis may also enjoy this book as there's plenty of it from start to finish. Reading about an association hidden within a normal business can be engaging and have you wondering if these secret society type organizations exist in the real world.
